Beyond CR 30

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Ever wondered if there was anything tougher than Tiamat or the Tarrasque?

Ever wondered where greater deities fit into the whole monster scheme of 5E?

Ever wondered what kind of monster it would take to defeat the best parties in the multiverse?

Well, wonder no further - Beyond CR 30 is here. This module not only puts forward a slightly modified way of thinking about the normal tiers of play in 5E, it also offers an addition to the monster creation rules found in the DMG, allowing DMs the freedom to create CR 31-35 monsters for themselves. Complete with the Hecatonkheires, a nightmarish example of what these optional rules are capable of creating, this module has everything you need to start creating these monsters for your own games!

But be warned! Monsters using these rules ramp up VERY quickly - from the terrifying CR 31s to the apocalyptic CR 35s, which should be functionally unbeatable by anything a party can put together using the Core Rules.

UPDATE (Nov 26, 2016): Massive overhaul to text based on experience making the Pantheon series. Added information on Overdeities as well as some more art - plus a new cover!

What's inside:

  • An examination of the concept of high-level monsters and progression
  • Rules for creating monsters from CR 31 to CR 35 (i.e. greater deities)
  • Speculations on creating monsters from CR 36 to CR 40 (i.e. overdeities)
  • Suggested traits and guidelines for creating and running greater deities
  • The Hecatonkheires, an example CR 31 monster

Hi It's still me, I know that I sound impatient and that I can't wait to see the product, but I would like to know if we will see the new release of the revisitation of Beyond CR 30 manual in the early future since I would really like to implement It in an Epic One shot that I will do maybe soon.

Hi I recently purchased this manual and I was wondering if there Is a compendium or some sort of book with statblocks for Monsters with challenge rating 36-40 which uses your rules for creaturs beyond CR 30 that Is already done , Is there a website or something similar where I can get these Monsters, the fact Is that I'm not really good at making cool Monsters with such High challenge rating. Thank you in Advance for the answer.

Hi Riccardo,

Each entry in the Pantheon series includes five CR 31+ monsters, each modeled off a deity from an ancient pantheon. Odin, Vishnu, Osiris, etc.
You can also find a CR 35 fiend in the Asmodeus document.
I haven't seen much interest in play at this level, so that's all I've done so far - though I have had design plans for many more that just haven't been developed yet.

Hi Riccardo,

I was close to revising the entire Beyond CR 30/Pantheons line, but real life got in the way and I had to delay the project. Possibly in the future I will look at releasing a revised edition of Beyond CR 30 that includes 12-20 Monsters ranging from CR 30 to 40. I'll keep you posted!

Joe, I just downloaded this product and have quickly skimmed it. It is a fun and interesting way to make greater gods. However, I noticed an anomaly in your HP/DPR ratio. It is typically 2.66, like the DMG, but your CR 35 tops out at 1.8. Is this intentional or a mistake?

Also, the "Overdeities" section appears twice.

Anyway, thank you for the interesting epic options.

Hi Dave! Thanks for the compliment! I'm glad you like what you've read so far.
The repeated section is definitely a mistake - fixing ASAP!

As for the ratio, that was intentional. I think the CR 35 achieves a meaningful "soft cap" in DPR by working out to 500-1000 DPR in ~5 attacks (1/PC). That's comfortably in TPK territory (sans Epic Boons, of course), which is the conceptual benchmark for a 35. They can certainly go higher, breaking into the Overdeity tier in terms of damage output, but in practically all non-Epic Boons games it would be overkill.

Thanks again, and thanks for the heads up - no idea how I missed that!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
