Product History

Greyhawk Player's Guide (1998), also referred to as the Player's Guide to Greyhawk, by Anne Brown, was the second book in Wizards of the Coast's 1998 return to Greyhawk. It was published in June 1998.

Introducing the Fourth Era. Wizards' previous Greyhawk release, Return of the Eight (1998), ended the "From the Ashes" era of Greyhawk publication. The Player's Guide jumped the clock forward six years (as was popular to do in the metaplot-heavy 90s). This allowed Wizards to present a brighter version of the setting, as there had been time for wounds to heal (and for the Circle of Eight to reassert their power).

Expanding Greyhawk. Player-focused crunch had been largely absent in previous Greyhawk releases. The Player's Guide directly addressed that situation by presenting player kits in the style of the long-running PHBR series (1989-1995) for AD&D second edition. Though it contains new material, the Player's Guide also directly adapts material from several previous Greyhawk books, including The World of Greyhawk (1983), Greyhawk Adventures (1988), The City of Greyhawk (1989), and From the Ashes (1992).

The Adventure Continues. A GM's guide to Greyhawk was released a month later as The Adventure Begins (1998).

The Player's Guide also contains a list of "adventuring attractions" in Greyhawk, touching upon three adventuring sites that would receive their own modules before year's end: "Crypt of Lyzandred the Mad" (1998), "The Doomgrinder" (1998), and "The Star Cairns" (1998).

About the Creators. Anne Brown had been an advocate of Greyhawk back in the TSR days. While there, she also co-authored the "Falcon" Series of Greyhawk Adventures, WGA1-WGA3 (1990). The Player's Guide was her last book for AD&D, though a few years later she returned to the field with some d20 work for Fast Forward Entertainment (2002-2003).

About the Product Historian

The history of this product was researched and written by Shannon Appelcline, the author of Designers & Dragons - a history of the roleplaying industry told one company at a time. Please feel free to mail corrections, comments, and additions to shannon.appelcline@gmail.com.

We (Wizards) recognize that some of the legacy content available on this website does not reflect the values of the Dungeons & Dragons franchise today. Some older content may reflect ethnic, racial, and gender prejudice that were commonplace in American society at that time. These depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. This content is presented as it was originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed. Dungeons & Dragons teaches that diversity is a strength, and we strive to make our D&D products as welcoming and inclusive as possible. This part of our work will never end.

Would love a pod of this!

Does anyone here know why it is impossible (?) to get hold of Roger E Moore's "Greyhawk: The Adventure Begins" as a good pdf with maps and all? Sure, it's on ebay, but I would like a good (cheaper!) pdf. :)

It is a shame that they are too lazy to put up a clean scan of this. If they did that and had a POD option, they would easily make back the cost of the effort. If they would provide me with a copy of the original product, I would scan it and provide them with a great PDF product. My fee would be that they let me keep the original product.

I'd be happy if someone can confirm when the scan is improved. Also, how difficult would it to integrate with a CY 576 1E campaign? I'm guessing that a lot of the crunch is fairly independent of meta-story hooks, but would like some confirmation.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
