The Horror Under the Mountain.

Volume 1 of the Great White North Trilogy.

On a nameless, featureless demi-plane the Tarrasque rages across an all-encompassing nothingness.  Last seen on Faerun a century ago during the cataclysm of Odobaz, the battle mage order of the Eldritch Storm sacrificed itself to banish the mighty titan to its demi-plane prison.  Now a foul power emerges in the High Ice and nightmare visions of the Tarrasque trampling cities wrack the minds of the living—can your adventurers defeat the Horror Under the Mountain?

This is a 46 page adventure for characters level 14 to 16.  You can preview the entire adventure by clicking "Full-size Preview."  Please  preview the adventure before you purchase it to make sure you are happy with the maps which I made in GIMP to resemble 1st edition blue/white maps.

Note: following the release of Volo's Guide to Monsters I have included an addendum (as a seperate file) which updates the module with the relevant information regarding Mind Flayers.

If you like this adventure check out the other stand-alone adventures in the series: The Dead Wedding and Moloch's Revenge.

Reading the elder brain statblock, what is the strategy behind it? The pseudopods seem less useful than the RAW tentacles and the psionic stuff seems less useful, or perhaps more needlessly clunky, than just giving it some added innate spellcasting that does a similar job. Juggling between the pdf from wizards and yours for the final boss seems counterintuitive to me.

I agree with you 100%. This adventure predates the release of the actual Elder Brain stat block. If you have access to that then I would substitute it for the one I made.

You say that Onas has the ability to "telepathically shield" the party, but there is no mechanism in the adventure, ToF, nor Unearthed Arcana: Psionics & the Mystic v2. What is the mechanism/source used?

Once the qualith portal is opened, Onas takes off to gather a githzerai army. How, then, is he able to telepathically shield the party, so they may explore the city? This is an important point as you say, "the best result in terms of player satisfaction was achieved when the adventurers had time to explore the city for two to
three numbered encounters while shielded from the elder brain's telepathy."

Hi Christopher K, thanks for the comment. I wrote this before Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes was released, but in truth Onas can be more powerful than a Zerth. Unfortunately the Githzerai stat blocks are rather limited. Nondetection is a 3rd level spell that nullifies the Elder Brian's Creature Sense ability. I'd recommend calling him a Githzerai Enlightened and swapping out one of his 3/day spells for Nondetection. If the players cannot be shielded then treat B'al Crek as the active city it is--there is closely monitored commerce and visitors. The party could certainly bluff there was a group of Zhentarim emissaries or powerful merchants. I hope these ideas are helpful.

Hey, is there any chance of you offering proper maps ready for VTT software/printing for those of us who buy pre-made adventures with the express intent of avoiding having to make maps from scratch and so on?

Any idea when the next two installments of the trilogy will be available? My group really liked the concept of this, and I want to make sure the trilogy is still in process before we get rolling on it. Thanks!

Hi Michael,
I've actually just finished running the playtests of the second installment. I've decided to treat the three as a stand-alone series. They'll take place in the same general area, but the villains and plots will change. The third installment will, however, bring back Beotan and the High Ice. I'm in the process of formatting the new adventure, "The Dead Wedding," on the homebrewery and I hope to have it up in a couple of weeks.
best,
Brian
p.s. if you play through Horror please leave a review (good, bad, or ugly) and I'll take on the feedback for any future revision.

What do the brown and gray lines represent on the Illithid city map? I'm thinking gray are cavern walls and brown are roads or paths, but there's all this wide open space. is that wide open space just filled with generic shops and dwellings, so the only path through is the road?

First, thank you for your purchase, comments, and your review!
When I play tested the adventure the gray lines were main roads and the brown lines were small paths within the city. The grey lines exit the cavern (either into the underdark [ecnouncter 8] or into the grimlock caverns [marked as 5 on the map]). The grey path on the east by the residence is elevated as building 10 sits on a natural shelf in the cavern. The two brown lines are paths that rise up to it. The white buildings are shops, temples, residences, etc. The open space was dark ground strewn with boulders and pools of water heated by thermal vents. Think mordor but underground. I'm working on an update that will add more detail to the city.

Hope to get it done this summer. Unfortunately I'm too busy with my square job at the moment to write part two.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
