Hi Dave, thanks for the Investigation check! Sorry about the delayed response, the site doesn't seem to let a person know they've gotten new reviews/discussions.

You're spot on about the HD being wrong, but at 362 HP he'd have a defensive CR 26. His immunity to nonmagical weapons (rather than the more common resistance), plus Legendary Resistances and Regen add up to give him 563 effective HP (CR 24). Couple that with Magic Resistance and his good saves, and he's got a +1 adjustment, for CR 25. I've fixed the HD either way, thank you for spotting that and letting me know.

Claw was totally a typo - fixed.

Lord of Randomness - I'm glad you like the ability! It reminds me of the way dragons can blast their fear auras every round in addition to their attacks, only Chourst blasts some random magical effect each round. The ability really just gives him a built-in wand of wonder. Some of those effects allows saves, some don't. The DMG has the exhaustive details on that item and...See more

Glad I could help; however, I don't think you are calculating CR correctly. I get an effective HP of 439 (337 x 1.125)+ 60 (regen X3) per the DMG. Not sure if you are doubling up resistances and immunities, but I don't think that is how it works. Look at Tiamat for an "official" example. She has more immunities (including spells below 6th lvl) and using HP x 1.125 + regen (as I noted above) you get an effective HP of 781 and defensive CR of 32 for her, which is actually higher then her total CR 30. My point is I think you are calculating effective CR to high based on both the DMG and published examples.

That being said, his HP is similar to the demon lords in OotA. However, most people think they are a bit weaksauce.

Also, realize a 337 HP monster will only last about 1 round against a lvl 17-20 party, so I think you really should look into bumping up his HP or AC or both.

One last thing about regen i discovered recently - it can be complete defeated by the...See more

Hi Dave. Make sure you're multiplying base HP by 1.25, not 1.125, then adding effective HP for regen and legendary resistances as per the DMG.

(333 base HP × 1.25 for immunities), + 90 for Legendary Resistance, + 60 for Regen = 566 eHP (dCR 24); plus the eAC of 22 (18 + 2 for saves, + 2 for magic resist.) gives him a DCR adj. of +1, for dCR 25.

re: chill touch. That's more of an issue with how chill touch works than with any creature that dies if they don't regen on their turn if they start with 0 hp. Not much I can do about that other than lay out specific exceptions to the cantrip's effects. Besides, Chourst shouldn't be fighting to 0 hit points unless the DM has turned him into a loot bag. Between Plane Shift, Otto's, Stun, and Disappear, Chourst should be pretty hard to pin down. Good catch on that, though!

Joe,
Thank you for taking the time to reply. I did have the multiplier wrong (I think i must have subconsciously averaged resistances and immunities) and I had completely ignored the " Monster Features" table. So I stand corrected, Chourst does follow the DMG CR.

However, that doesn't fix the problem (IMO). I imagine you want to follow the official guidelines for your monsters, but the fact is the guidelines are just to weak for epic level monsters. A party of 4-5 10th lvl pcs can pretty easily take out a CR23 monster (demon lords in OotA) in 5e, and to me that is problem. As you pointed out I was calculating HP wrong and I am still finding that my monsters are t0o low in HP. Lately I have to basically double the MM HP to get CR15 or higher monster to last more then 2 rounds (specific encounter details can obviously vary this). I tried to counter this by giving my monsters more damage to make them more of a threat, but they just fall to quickly. I am currently planning to adjust...See more

One last thing, by 17th level it is not unusual for a 4 party group to average 300hp of damage per round with higher nova potential. That is why I think the DMG and MM HP are too low.

Thanks for the insights, Dave, and the Investigation checks!

All in all, I think you're probably right about how strong PCs and monsters can be - i.e. that a well-honed PC team at higher levels has a remarkable impact on the relative strength of the monsters they face. All CRs are relatively lower than the MM suggests when the PCs are well-geared, experienced, and synergistic. I followed that logic all the way to its extreme in "Beyond CR 30", where I expect my monsters are going to be largely unbeatable unless some considerable luck comes into play.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
