Southcrypt Pass

Suggested Price $1.00

Introduction: Following the events in the introductory module “Lost Mines of Phandelver”, the characters are asked to investigate rumors of goblins gathering powerful allies.  This is followed by investigating and securing the mountain pass across the Sword Mountains into the Kryptgarden Forest.  Finding the pass is the easy part, securing it is another matter.  The region of Kryptgarden Forest and the Sword Mountains lies north of Waterdeep and south of Neverwinter along the Sword Coast.  This is a stand alone adventure that can be easily modified to change location in order to suit your campaign.

This is a 12 page adventure with a mostly straightforward layout consisting of several combat encounters mixed with investigation and npc interaction.

How does this module start? I'm planning to run a different one after my players complete the base story and am wondering if this relies on taking place shortly after the defeat of the black spider.

I ran it with my group after the LMoP adventure wrapped up and the PCs had time to rest a few weeks. I needed a route to take the group and thought that a pass through the mountains would bypass Leilon which I thought was a ghost town.

Do you think that this would be good for players of a slightly higher level say 7 or 8 if the encounters are adjusted, like add a few more enemy, replace enemy with a stronger one, or buff existing enemy?

absolutely. adding enemy is the quickest method, but that can make it too tough once the bad guys start getting more attacks than the party and if they can flank to get advantage. Also consider the size of the rooms when adding monsters.

I am working on a Phandalin adventure that includes the underground lake and kuo-toa. This is more level 9ish and should be out in the next month. You should be able to tie this in easily once you finish the Southcrypt adventures.

Thank you for the comments and review. I'm planning a follow up module hopefully by the end of next week. This next one has some drow and a chimera to tangle with.

Going to be taking my group through this. I have Gundren asking them to take a run at clearing the pass to make the Phandelver Mine more acessable, and will be taking out the skeletons and ghouls as the party has complained about how much undead they have encountered. I will be replacing them with something, just not sure what yet. This module acts like a good bridge (ha) between the Starter Set and Princes Of The Apocalypse which is where the party is headed towards next.

Did you alter Princes Of The Apocalypse to make it better suit your players level and if so what did you do?

I ran this module with my local group and it went fine. When making it suitable for you the public I found the maps that I used needed updating and they could still be better, but are mostly made for the DM to use, and I see where people are paid for layout and pdf work. I would encourage downloading it for free and checking it out before choosing to spend any money. I mostly want to see if the ideas and playability make it worthy to do some more modules in the region.

Rules Edition(s)
Original electronic
Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
