Frozen Castle - Expanding Tyranny of Dragons

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Tyranny Expanded: A Return to Skyreach Castle!

The loss of Skyreach Castle in Hoard of the Dragon Queen was a major setback to the Cult of the Dragon, but still only a setback. The cult is determined to retake the castle and claim Tiamat's lost treasure buried in its frozen walls and cloudstuff vaults, but they aren't the only ones. Giants and creatures of the frozen wastes wish to claim that wealth themselves!

This 5th Edition Dungeons & Dragons adventure is designed for 10th- and 11th-level characters, and is set in the Forgotten Realms.

Get your giant on, and surprise your players with a chunk of Tyranny of Dragons that they can't find in the book!

Does this include any images of maps or is it just text for theater of the mind?

There’s a map of the area, but no battlemap with squares or hexes

It looks like Kobold Press is partnering with another VTT company which means it will probably never be converted. I sent them an e-mail asking if they had an official position on this being converted. If I hear back I will report.

Just finished running this with my Tyranny of Dragons group. Had to tweak it some to make sense, but it was a blast! I slipped it in as a mission in the second council meeting. The party was 6 level 10 players.

They had befriended Blagothkus and killed the dragon in HotDQ, though they let the giant take half the treasure as he left to go rally the giants. So I had the cult attack and crash the castle off screen. Attack was led by Rath Modar, 2 black dragons, a red dragon, and Talis the White (who has become a recurring villan and is now a high level wyrmspeaker as the one that recovered the white dragon mask). In my version Blagothkus was killed in the attack but didn't die in the castle so his wife's spirit still controls things. Stone giants went to Frost giants for help but party didn't go that route anyways. Black dragons attacked characters in route to metallic dragons and red wizard left to be seen later.

One thing that threw me off is my party had a helm of telepathy that the found...See more

At what point in the AL Tyranny of Dragon's modules, which have all been given away free at some point during the COVID-19 pandemic, would I slot this, assuming I am using it for a home game, and not Adventurer's League events?

None. It is higher level than any of the Tyranny of Dragons Adventurer's League modules and takes place in a vastly different geographical region of the Forgotten Realms.

It's designed to be inserted into Rise of Tiamat (the second half of the Tyranny of Dragons hardback campaign).

If you want to use it in a Tyranny AL campaign despite the above, you will need to either level it downwards (tough without losing the memorable high-level monsters in this) or level your AL characters way above what the AL modules are designed for.

Not even Season 2 of Adventurer's League (Mulmaster) gets as high as level 10-11.

Any chance of this being converted to Fantasy Grounds? Would LOVE to play it, as my group is just about done with the first half of Tyranny

I know it's short, but I'd love a softcover of this adventure.

Out of curiosity, why is this not AL-legal? After all, didn't Kobold press actually write HotDQ and RoT for WOTC?

Kobold Press writing the Tyranny of Dragons adventures has no bearing on whether a product is AL-legal.

I believe up until Tomb of Annihilation (AL season 7), official AL modules could only be published by WotC. ToA, Waterdeep, ID: RotF, WBtW, and Spelljammer have all had Community Created Content/Dungeoncraft programs where outsiders could get their modules AL approved. Those were each only available during the corresponding seasons, and there was a very rigorous set of formatting and guidelines that needed to be followed to get the module AL approved.

I bought this almost a year ago and just realized a huge plot hole. Skyreach was near Parnast which is located near the Greypeak Mountains, the castle would be heading back the the Well of Dragons to make the deposit which would be Southeast of the area Parnast is in. But this adventure has it set in the Spine of the World which is way up in the Northwest.

So if everything I said is true (and it is) then the logic on which this adventure was built is void and thus makes no sense. That aside though, the adventure really is well build and lore friendly hen it comes to the frost giant culture among other things. I'm just saying that the adventure has no way to actually happen if Skyreach has no reason to be in that area at all...

Ah, but remember, in HotDQ, regarding "Negotiating with the Cloud Giant", even when he was alive, Blagothkus would happily go up north where he's massing his own small army.

If the Cult betrays and kills him, or if the adventurers kill him, Blagothkus is a ghost and commands the castle. That's why as it says in the beginning, "In the most likely outcome of that adventure, the giant spirit that controls Skyreach Castle guided the fortress to the Miklos Glacier, far into the frozen North." Naturally he wants to get revenge on the cult or adventurers by bringing the treasure/castle to his only allies.

I mean, the writers don't know how you ended your particular copy of HotDQ -- if you ran it at all. So, it's up to the DM to smooth as needed. if you want a frozen adventure with giants, this is how you get one.

it says in the book that he just crashes the castle if he is killed, not that he drives it a certain direction then crashes it. As far as the Frozen castle thing says, when he crashes the castle it crashed in a location it wouldnt have been anywhere near at the time.

However as a DM its not too hard to change how the whole thing happens, its not too big a change although the distance is still an issue, plus the castle only moves when fueled by magic items being fed into it.

My players befriended Blagothkus after hearing his sob story about how he's essentially a hostage of the cult - they have his children and killed his wife. It was easy enough to convince the players to travel north with Blagothkus so that he can be reunited with his tribe and they (the tribe, not the players) can mount a mission to save the children. They go north, cult raid, castle crashes. Simple enough.

Question for others running this: How are you handling Blagothkus's interactions with the frost giants? It sounds like he's asking Brunvild for help to resurrect the castle.

Do you think Blagothkus can just order the frost giants around, given their positions in the Ordning? But if so, that doesn't leave much role for the party as helpers (if that's what they choose to do).

To look at it another way, what would happen if the party did nothing or wasn't there... I guess giants/orcs vs. cult, right?

Blagothkus may outrank Brunvild, but he's on Brunvild's home territory, so that evens out the balance of power somewhat. You could even have them make those points during an argument scene ("I outrank you!" "You may be higher in the Ordning, but this is my hall!").

Makes sense, thanks for the suggestion! I also figure Blagothkus is the one coming with a rather steep request, so Brunvild has a different kind of power in that situation.

For those of you who want a way to run this even though in your game, the castle didn't crash after all, here's how we're handling it...

This expansion assumes the castle crashes full of treasure. I know that's the most likely outcome, but in my game, it went differently. After things went crazy with the cult and they defeated Glazhael, they convinced Blagothkus to drop them AND Rezmir's stolen treasure off in their home city.

So, since I still needed a crashed castle for this to work, I had Blagothkus proceed to the Misty Forest to pick up Neronvain's shipment, before the cult caught wind of his betrayal. Then they sent Arauthator (or Arveiturace if your group already killed Arauthator) and some cultists to attack the castle, successfully crashing it into the glacier.

From there we're proceeding as usual. Fun times!

I'm just finishing up running this, and I've used it as a transition adventure between Hoard of the Dragon Queen and Rise of Tiamat. The module says it's for 10th level characters, but my 8th level party of 5 has had no problems. My party had befriended Blagothkos (the cloud giant owning the castle), and during the battle with the dragon at the end of HOTDQ, I had the dragon escape, team up with another dragon dispatched when the cult heard from Roth Modar that the castle was in danger (via sending), and the two dragons brought down the castle then with the PC's in it, and it crashed - setting the stage for Frozen Castle. I had them discovered badly injured and unconscious by Dalo, and the woke up in his care. He described the lay of the land and the various destinations to be explored. I'm running the showdown battle at the end using the Unearthed Arcana mass combat rules ("When Armies Clash" article) ... i don't know how you would be expected to run this showdown at the end reasonably using regular...See more

You could, but the hook would be a little out there .... "you've tried to take over a flying castle battling an evil cult, but the cloud giant that owns it has crashed it, and now you need to recover your castle again..."? And you'd need highish level characters.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
