The Sha’ir and the Elemental Patrons

A new Otherwordly Patron for the Warlock Class and new Familiar Options.

From the Land of Intrigue known as Calimshan to the Land of Fate in Zakhara the Warlock Class in these places are known as the Sha’ir. Their unconventional methods, combined with their reputation for consorting with dangerous, often violent, powers, place Sha’irs on the fringes of the magical world. Sha’irs do not deal directly with these Elemental powers; instead, they rely on proxies, elemental spirits called gen servants

The Sha’ir is a new Otherwordly Patron for the Warlock Class. This Otherworldly Patron takes some guidance from the 4E title Player’s Options: Heroes of the Elemental Chaos

Having the power to use Conjure Elemental with a warlock spell slot is actually very unbalanced. Since warlocks recover spell slots after a short rest, a level 10 warlock has the potential to summon approximately 15 elementals per day, assuming you expend your two spell slots to cast conjure elementals then immediately take a short rest. Or to look at it in a different light, when you have Conjure Elemental as a spell slot, your average warlock is essentially capable of summoning two PCs with a minimum of 90 HP and a damage output of around 30 hit points per round every encounter. Compare that to wizards, who can only cast Conjure Elemental 2 times per day at 10th level, and you'll see there's a large discrepancy in power.

Hi Edward, thank you for the feedback, but Conjure Elemental is a concentration spell and it only lasts an hour. Plus if concentration is broken then the elemental turns hostile. Also the highest level CR they can summon is CR 5, while a wizard can summon a higher than CR 5 elemental. Overall, I think it is pretty fair. Hope you liked everything else with the patron. How did you like the Gen Servants?

Just popping in to point out that "Conjure Elemental" is already available to warlocks through an invocation, which allows you to cast it with a Warlock spell slot...but only once per long rest. Seems a bit odd to contradict a decision that was made in the core class itself.

Hi Michael, good point. This Otherworldy Patron basically makes it easier for the Warlock (Sha'ir) to access the Elemental Powers. I tried to create effects that made it easier to show the bargains made and the Patron's favoritism shown. A Warlock with Pact of the Chain can also summon a Familiar (Gen Servant), but with the Elemental Powers as patron, this can be done at 1st level instead of 3rd. In play I have not found the changes to be so unbalancing, but it does give the Warlock a lot more options at the start then a RAW 5E PHB Warlock and some neat role play options as well.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
