Spellfire Wielder

"It can lay low a dragon or heal a wounded warrior..."

Spellfire Wielder is a complete class that allows you to explore the full potential of the most coveted magical power in Faerûn. Inspired by the AD&D and 3rd edition versions of spellfire as well as Shandril's Saga by Ed Greenwood.

Includes three archetypes, briefly detailed below:

  • Spellfire Channeler: You are on the path toward achieving true mastery over spellfire. You can shape and unleash the power of your gift in ways lesser wielders can only dream of.

  • Weavetouched: You wield the fabled Silver Fire, a rare form of spellfire that until the restoration of the Weave was only seen in the hands of Mystra's chosen.

  • Corrupted Wielder: A villainous/antihero path that allows you to drain magic not only from spells or items but from the lifeforce of living creatures as well.

Important note: At the end of the document you will find answers to some of the most common questions about the design of the class and how it should be implemented in a campaign. Feel free to ask me any other questions you might have and I will answer them and edit the document as needed.

Update 3/2/2016: Spellfire Blast now has a base damage of 1d6 (Greatly improves sustainability at lower/mid levels). Crown of Fire does not require 10 spellfire points per round to maintain (the price was too steep considering your magic absorbing capabilities are diminished for its duration).

Update 4/1/2017: Improved recovery of spellfire points and other minor quality of life changes.

Hi. Thank you for creating this.

Is it intended for the Absorb Magic feature to work automatically? As in, if the person has their reaction available when targeted with a spell, they absorb it automatically? Do they need to be aware of the spell and choose to use their reaction to do it, or does it kick off regardless, thus saving them from the spell but using up their reaction, even if they might want to use it for something else?

Related to that previous question, are cantrips always absorbed, even if they are beneficial or the spellfire wielder wants to accept them? Does 'automatically' in the case of cantrips mean the reaction is not used to absorb them?

I notice there seems to be no roll to see if a spell is absorbed, so that would suggest that 'automatically' doesn't mean 'always succeeds' as success seems to be automatic anyway, basically meaning any spellfire wielder immune to magic, as far as I can tell. Is this the intent?

I did read the...See more

Hello Kathleen!!! It is amazing to see that people still talk to me about this class that I hold very dear to my heart.

The wording was chosen to match the rest of the 5th edition reactions and as such, it is the player's choice if they will use it or not. With that being said when we played the class in my group we used the "you absorb magic if you can whether you like it or not" version for thematic reasons.

Yes, automatically for cantrips means that the reaction is not used but the player can choose to let cantrips affect him. Cantrip level magic requires no conscious effort from the wielder to be absorbed and thus does not consume her reaction. Yes, there is no roll to absorb, it always succeeds. The wielder is effectively completely immune to one magical effect per turn (two if she also readies her action to absorb magic) no matter how powerful it is.

At the end of the document, I talk about this choice. While I tried to align the class as close as possible...See more

I'm playing this now, and I've got a question about Spellfire Initiate. Does the Faerie Fire cost any spellfire points to use? I'm assuming Light and Dancing Lights do not, but not requiring it for Faerie Fire just seems a little strong

Hey Brian!!

Sorry for the late reply but Faerie Fire should cost 3 Spellfire points to activate. I have it on the list of changes I will upload soon.

This too was my first D&D novel and I really enjoy this work. I do have a question : Life Drain says that one "cannot gain more spellfire points from a single creature than its
maximum Hit dice until 24 hours have passed. " Is this Hit Points or Character Level (Hit dice).

Also, is there a way to absorb spell slots from an unconscious person without being evil?

My race let me pick one lv1 spell, usable once per long rest so I chose Mage Armor, and adding something like this might greatly increase survivability versus melee, as would letting Shield of Fire act like the Fire Shield spell. But maybe I overestimate the danger of melee.

I will be using this class for my first 5e game and let you know how it goes. Thank you for your work.

Am I the only person who notices how weak this class is?
- It gets no cantrips, meaning that it does not get reliable access to damage output
- Its restoration rate of spellfire points is too low; the benefits of using them are too low
- Since this class does not restore its power daily, it can be even weaker on a bad day

This is a super cool idea, but it needs some serious revision. Compare it side-by-side with a warlock and make sure they can go toe-to-toe.

Why don't you look at the warlock class as the basis, but replace its spell slots with the Spellpoints variant from the DMG. Then, give it cantrips, increase its Spellfire Blast damage, increase its Healing Fire healing. Balance the restoration of their spellfire points so that it is balanced with the warlock, but keep your flavor.

You may even want to create a unique Spellfire Blast cantrip (balance it against Eldrich Blast!)

Hey Josh, thanks for you comments. I have thought many times about the sustainability of the class. In our campaign which had an abundance of magic it was not much of a problem, although at lower levels it is always a factor. What I have been considering is making Spellfire Blast have a base damage of 1d6(+Charisma mod?) so you can use it as a cantrip/basic attack of sorts, but I would not add anything else.

Overshadowing other casters is very easy with this class, which is why I believe that balancing it with another caster class is not a good idea. Since you are more or less immune to magic from a single source at a time, being able to use you abilities as freely as the other casters will leave most players with a sour taste in their mouths.

The restoration rate of spellfire points will begin to skyrocket when magic items and higher level adversaries start coming into play. You will be debuffing them and making them waste their actions, while powering up yourself at the same time. If your DM is but a bit generous with what is considered absorbable/drainable magic it can get out of hand pretty fast.

This class does not aim to be a staple PHB one. It is its own thing, due to the unique flavor and nature of its powers. The highs and lows you are mentioning, should be a part of the class, although I totally understand your concerns and why you would want a more streamlined structure.

Happy adventuring and thanks again for your input. :)

I can see what you are saying. That being said, I do think that balance is still a goal for this class going forward. I like the idea of setting minimum damage, and you may consider increasing the healing too.

I would at least stabilize the resource a little. Let this class's ability to absorb magic be balanced against how warlocks restore spell-slots on a rest. Let this class's resources reset after a long rest; let them and a warlock have the same amount of power at the start of the adventuring day (none of this 1d10 stuff). However, where a warlock restores his power through short rests, this class would have to absorb magic.

I also don't really see the point of being able to hold onto over your maximum spellfire points is. To me it would be better if this class were relatively stable than anywhere on the scale of "I'm stuck in the underdark and nobody here casts spells" and "I am paralyzed from my awe-inspiring spell-tanking."

If the class's power...See more

Again great work, I have a couple of question though.

Is the save dc to prevent items being drained equal to the normal spellfire dc?

What is the action required to maintain Maelstrom of Fire?

Thanks for your comment!! Now on to some answers:

Yes, unless otherwise noted, for the features that require a save, use the Spellfire Save DC.

As long as you keep using your Action on your turn to power the effect it does not end. If you cannot, or if you choose to take a different Action, the Maelstrom ends and you cannot use it again until you have completed a long rest. I will change the wording to make a bit more clear when I update this.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
