Kobold Race

Kobolds. These ratty, lizardy little creatures are featured in countless D&D adventures. In editions of the past, they were even available as a playable race, allowing players to adventure out as these conniving little rascals. Here is my take on kobolds as a playable race for 5e, with two distinct subraces: the trap-obsessed kobolds of the warrens, and the urds, the flying kobolds blessed by Tiamat.

Ok, so the winged kobolds are fine. They are more than fine. At-will flying at level 1 is a very powerful, potentially gamebreaking tool. Warren kobolds, however, have nothing to off-set that, and there is very little reason to ever choose warren kobold over urd. What's your thought about giving warren kobolds Pack Tactics to make them look more enticing? Personally I don't think it would make them in any way gamebreaking, since the kobold base race seems relatively weak (compared to PHB PC races).

Another thing. A curiosity, kobold base speed is 30ft. I know you're pulling it from Monster Manual, but other Small PC races have base speed of 25ft. Just a thought.

Lastly, I want to try and implant a thought in your head. Namely, a third subrace option. Dragonwrought kobold, with scales the colour of their dragon ancestor, resistance to the corresponding damage, and maybe an extra cantrip or something. Just an idea, use it or not as you see fit. (I was going to put one in my kobold guide,...See more

I would agree that Warren kobold is underwhelming as it is right now compared to the Urd, but I don't think that a flying speed is gamebreaking. Aarokochra have it and they're way stronger than the kobolds presented here, and that's official WOTC stuff.

I would never give a player race pack tactics. It's simply too powerful to have all the time, and in limited form it feels too weak. It's a feature that I've never seen a solid middle ground for. I did have an idea for allowing them to use the Help action as a bonus action against a creature when an ally is within 5 feet of the same creature, but that overlaps with the Mastermind rogue subclass' crowning feature.

Kobolds having 30ft speed is a race feature. As a player race, they've never had a speed penalty.

I originally did have dragonwrought kobolds as a subrace, but as they are from a 3.5e splat book and don't have much foundation in 5e lore yet, I've decided not to have them yet. I may add them in at some point.

don't know if this is "canonical" or not but in the tyranny of Dragons online comics Kobolds have different colored skin in the colors of chromatic dragons.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
