Product History

The Goblin's Lair (1992), by Graeme Davis, is the second adventure pack for The New Easy to Master Dungeons & Dragons Game (1991). It was published in June 1992.

About the Cover. Like the other adventure packs, this one features reused cover art, this time from OP1: Tales of the Outer Planes. It's a particularly inappropriate piece of art because it depicts githyanki … who the editors must have thought looked sort of like goblins!

Origins: Another Black Box. The Goblin's Lair (1992), like its predecessor, The Dragon's Den (1992), is meant to match the black-boxed New Easy to Master Dungeons & Dragons Game (1991). Once more you get a box in the same size (this time with gray sides), and you get board-game-like components such as battle mats and stand-up cardstock figures.

Adventure Tropes. Like most of the "beginner" products produced for the black box D&D game, this one features very simple dungeon crawl adventures, dumping the characters straight into the dungeon and staying there. The only distinguishing feature about these dungeons is that one of them is quite large.

Board Game Tropes. The Goblin's Lair also has rules for a simple board game that can be played with its components. This one is more complex than the board game rules in The Dragon's Den, including stats for both attacks and defenses, as well as spells.

Exploring Thunder Rift. The Goblin's Lair is the first of the adventure packs set in the Thunder Rift, which is better known for its line of short 16-page adventures. However, the three adventures are somewhat superficially placed in the Rift: two of them near Kleine (one in the Burning Hills) and the third near Hearth-Home.

Monsters of Note. As the title of this adventure suggests, it's all about the goblins. So how do you make goblins interesting, particularly as characters level up? You include a random assortment of other monsters, you introduce more powerful goblins like wolf riders or shamans, and you supplement with higher level humanoids like hobgoblins and bugbears.

About the Creators. Davis is a British designer, who did much of his early work for Games Workshop, including the Enemy Within (1986-1988) and Doomstones (1990) campaigns. By the early '90s, he was also writing for White Wolf and produced two TSR releases: The Goblin's Lair and HR3: Celts Campaign Sourcebook (1992).

About the Product Historian

The history of this product was researched and written by Shannon Appelcline, the editor-in-chief of RPGnet and the author of Designers & Dragons - a history of the roleplaying industry told one company at a time. Please feel free to mail corrections, comments, and additions to shannon.appelcline@gmail.com.

We (Wizards) recognize that some of the legacy content available on this website does not reflect the values of the Dungeons & Dragons franchise today. Some older content may reflect ethnic, racial, and gender prejudice that were commonplace in American society at that time. These depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. This content is presented as it was originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed. Dungeons & Dragons teaches that diversity is a strength, and we strive to make our D&D products as welcoming and inclusive as possible. This part of our work will never end.

Is "Red Hand Trail" still missing? Ironically, I bought this physical boxed set online, and it is also missing Red Hand Trail.

It is still missing, yes. I would suggest if you've bought this or any other official copy that's missing it, there's nothing wrong with you finding a 'free' copy somewhere to download to make up for the missing part. There's also the unofficial updated versions of the maps in high quality I've linked to below as well.

For anyone who bought this and was disappointed with the map quality/situation I've made new versions of the maps that compliment these adventures, here: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/431378/Back-to-the-Dungeon-Map-Pack-1

I have reconstituted the 3 large battle maps in this kit, not sure how to distribute them though. They are about 50mb each as a jpg.

I would like to purchase, but I don't see any response to the problems that were previously raised:
1) INCOMPLETE: Missing the adventure "Red Hand Trail"
2) INCOMPLETE: Not all maps are complete (due to misalignment?)
3) POOR QUALTY: PDFs need to be cleaned up and properly aligned

Please respond or post if the above have been fixed
Thank you

Sorry My last post was made for the dragon's den not goblins lair. The only thing wrong with Goblins Lair is that it is missing one adventure (Red Hand Trail) out of the 3 adventures it should come with.

As of the May 2018 update they have no stand ups no tiles dressings and the maps all print out super small and un-usable for the stand ups. I emailed them about it but as of yet I havent heard anything about it being fixed after the bad update.

Did you submitted a complaint for a replacement or account credit?

(I have a similar problem with the other expansion box set, "The Haunted Tower.")

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
