MZC1 The Maztica Campaign Guide

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Welcome to the True World!  This campaign sourcebook, along with the 5th edition core rulebooks, is all you need to begin adventuring in the fabled lands of Maztica!

Please Visit Maztica Alive! for updates, news and everything you need to know about the True World Campaign!

This product is produced by “Maztica Alive!” - a collection of authors, artists, cartographers and others who have come together to expand and recreate the western continent of the Forgotten Realms world of Toril, keeping it in line with canon from all editions.  This continent consists of Anchôromé in the north, Lopango in the south and the well known region of Maztica in between. Many of its inhabitants have come to calling their home the True World.

The Maztica Alive! crew now has over fifty supplements and articles broken down by region or author. The products all complement and remain consistent with one another and in some cases even reach into the planes or the stars.  Each Maztica Alive! product is linked below.

The third letter of each tag determines the type of product available from "C"ampaign guides to "S"upplements, "M"ini supplements and articles or even "A"dventures.

Additional authors will have tagging systems as determined by the author.  If you are interested in becoming part of the Maztica Alive! team, please email Jon Hild at seethe75 on gmail.!

i'm looking for some direction on possible monsters to be used for the Thirteen Butterflies of Qotal adventure hook. I'm incorporating this as a side quest to a three part one shot, since the group im DMing for is a 2nd level party who are new to DnD (as am I), im having trouble choosing what monsters to populate the cleft with. Did you have any particular monsters in mind, the description says the priestess in her vision "felt teeth and the smell of rank breath". For context the main story revolves around a cult leader inspired by Alban the last Ruler of Mictlatepec. She is harnessing mictlaneca as her undead army to punish the living and sacrifice them in order to gain Zaltec's favor. Any help or guidnace would be much appreciated. Also, stellar job the Maztica conversion to 5e, it is badass!

Hey there! I am glad you like the book and I am even happier you are trying to pursue this hook that I wish I had gotten around to myself. Originally, of all things, I had wanted to transport the render from the Ruins of Zhentil Keep boxed set over to Maztica, only because I thought it was such an amazing creature with a unique story. The reason he got there was convoluted and it was like fitting a square block into a round hole so I wouldn't suggest it (plus with 2nd level PCs, - he's too tough). What I can suggest will require a bit of homebrew, but every time I have needed a new villain backstory, particularly ones involved with the gods, I have either used Itzapaplotl (again too tough) or returned to the lore of Kukul's "severed fingers that wriggled to life as the first humans." This was my origin story for Camazotz in Maztica and two others in the Dragonglass adventure. Such a threat could appear as almost any undead and doesn't have to be ultra powerful, but sure can have an interest in...See more

Thanks for all your insight! I definitely plan to run the Camaztoz hook, getting to play him seems extremely satisfying as a big bad evil guy and also... just so damn fun. Thanks for the suggestions, those creatures really do sound terrifying, in the best way possible.

Very impressive work!

A couple of small concerns I noticed regarding one of the archetypes, however—to wit, the pochteca:

1. Expert Traveler is an immensely powerful ability as written. Blindsight is hands-down the most powerful special sense in the game, so blindsight out to "a range equal to your normal sight" renders every other sense in the game irrelevant by comparison. Special senses are usually limited to a 60 or 120 range, max. "Normal sight" extends way, way beyond that. In fact, this ability is so strong that the 17th level ability Uncanny Awareness almost doesn't even do anything by the time you get it because it's already basically impossible to surprise you outside of perhaps "scry and die" tactics.

2. Built for Speed is weird because half of what it does is nothing at all. Not being affected by difficult terrain is nice, but gaining dash as a bonus action at level 13 is kind of a booby prize given you've already had that ability...See more

Some really great points here. I will look into either updating the original or putting out a small (free obviously) errata at some point that covers errors and poor judgment calls for each of the books in the Maztica/Anchorome campaigns.

Can Plumacasters and Hishnacasters cast Wizard spells without the pluma or hishna tags respectively?
Reply
Customer avatar
Jon H February 03, 2022 5:54 pm UTC
CREATOR
Yes absolutely. The intention with pluma and hishna spells was to give access to Pluma and Hishnacasters or those who access through some other means such as a feat. I used the "Ritual Casting" ability as inspiration for this. It also allows an easy feature to be added to future homebrewed classes/subclasses.

For balance purposes, since this wide variety of spells was added to the casters' repertoire, other features were removed. I wanted to empower Maztican casters, but not overpower them!

Do Pluma and Hishna use Mystra's weave, or do they use something else? I made an NPC wizard for my campaign that originally learned Faerunian wizardry before moving to Maztica and becoming a Plumacaster and I want to know how he would describe the differences between the two styles of magic.

I believe I read somewhere (perhaps in one of Ed Greenwood's tweets or on Candlekeep.com) that all magic in Realmspace flows through the Weave, so I would assume yes. Pluma and hishna taps the magic of feathers and talons/fangs/claws respectively, but I'd assume that magic is also itself, Weave magic. Maztica (the goddess) "invented" pluma, passing it on to her son Qotal to pass to humans, and Zaltec is responsible...

That certainly is something lacking, I agree. Just so you know the reason why it isn’t included; this book was made long before the Monsters of Maztica book came out. There were no encounters appropriate to place into a table.

Now that it’s out I think an encounter table would be a great idea for part of an update to the file.

Hello!
I have begun a Maztica campaign recently. I was originally inspired to do so from one of Dungeon Dad's Monster of the Week videos (the Tzitzimitl, though is is very different from what's in your book, so I'm using it as a "special" tzitzimitl that is the primary threat to the continent). I wanted the place to feel separate from everything else in the world, so I set it in the FR year of 1235 DR (with certain liberties taken to allow for some plumastone use).
In the first session, after the giant tzitzimitl materialized during a solar eclipse and wrecked the PCs' home village, the PCs fought off a horde of zombies that rose up after being killed by the tzitzimitl. To give them a fighting chance (they had no weapons because they were in a festival), I had the artisan PC's teacher give each of them a minor talisman to use. It made the fight fun and significantly more interesting.
Now, I played fast and loose with the talisman rules for this session. Technically, though I had picked...See more

Hey there! Great comments and questions. It has been a few years since I really thought hard about the class creation, so let me see if I can answer those questions properly. Please, if my answers don't serve your game, just ignore them.

First off, plumastone has been around for a long time canonically. It appeared first in the Maztica novels by Douglas Niles and was used by the desert dwarves so there is precendence for having some available, just not as much as there is today.

Secondly, I really want to hear more about this campaign, particularly with this giant tzitzimitl. Itzapaplotl hasn't made an appearance in a while, and I'd love to know what she is up to. (I can be emailed at my gmail seethe75).

I had intended for artisans to be able to create talismans using effects from any spells on those lists, not just the ones they chose to learn. This was in order to give them a little more versatility, though only with effective planning beforehand. In fact, may I...See more

don't you find it low key offensive how you write that this continent returned, practically, for those who want to plunder it, as if the rehashed colonial trope wasn't bad enough in its inception. Did anyone of mexica or indigenous descent work on this with you or was it all your research? imo there are alot of good ideas in here, but they are overshadowed by the colonial lens.

I can't tell you how much I appreciate this question/comment. This very concept has been what has guided me in my pursuit of the update. In the early 90s when I was just a teen, I read the Maztican Novels (and sourcebooks), was utterly enamored with the setting, and hugely disappointed (well, angered tbh) with the execution. I saw endless potential, but then wondered what in the world was going on. Why was the colonial route taken when there was so much greatness to be explored?!! At that time in my life, I couldn't quite understand what didn't sit so well, but I have learned its name in recent years.

I hope that my attempt to "do better" (because something like this can never truly be fixed) by focusing on making the setting stand on its own without the colonial influence has made it better but in no ways perfect. I hope you get an opportunity to read the timeline so you can see that I have tried to move fully away from the problems of 90s sensibilities.

To be specific...See more

I'm making my way through it, i'm researching all 5e mesoamerican content because my hope was to write an adventure in the spirit of the hero twins of mayan mythology, but so much of the content i have found has been through the colonial lens, so why would i want to play that or explore a world for anything other than vengeance as a person of that ancestry?

With that being said, I would really love for you to get through this book and let me know what you think then. Every word I wrote I had in the back of my mind exactly what was bothering you about the older version. I'd really like to know if you think I managed to do better. I attempted to utterly eradicate the colonial angle of Maztica. It wasn't all that difficult to do with the continent being on another world for 100 years!

I was off put initially by the start of the history overview, "After now having returned for half a decade, those who seek to plunder its riches once again might find the continent quite a bit more prepared." this whole part isn't needed, its not that the natives weren't prepared during the colonization irl, it was that disease overtook them, internal warfare among the rival tribes were a big part, as was the religious celebrations going on that stalled the gathering of native soldiers, etc. that just my opinion on that, but right after, at the start of historical era, i just dont believe that maztican historians would have a hard time documenting history as this was a big part of mesoarmerican cultures, in the aztec empire alone, literacy was a huge deal, that's why most of their documents and codices were burnt.

in my own initial thoughts to maztica magic, i want to implement the use of ritual tattoos and piercings as well as the ability to craft talismans out of stone or metal like gold....See more

So, I was really impressed by this book and recently came back to see if there had been any new releases in the series, but now I find myself at a loss as to how the different titles all fit together? Apparently, some are "mark 1" products and others are revised editions of older titles? Is there any kind of definitive guide to Maztica Alive that shows how the different books compare? The TSR-esque naming structure really doesn't help me keep track of things at all.

Hi there. Yes I can see how this is confusing. I have been working on Maztica and Anchorome even prior to 5th edition so there are versions everywhere over the past decade (there’s even a 3rd edition version which is TERRIBLE floating around on the internet somewhere).

Basically, I learned a lot through trial and error over the years and after a series of a dozen or so books (everything marked TW*) I found most of it needed updating, editing and balancing. A year or two ago I started reorganizing resulting in the links above (each image is a product link).

The links for what I have yet to update are still above (like Lopango), but I’m intentionally de emphasizing them. I’ll rewrite the description above soon to make this all clearer.

Hi there! Let me see if I can answer your questions properly. To begin with I don't really charge for my books so you can just take them as is - I don't mind at all. If you like them, some have a PWYW option afterwards but I value comments as much. I only ever charge to cover the cost of artwork.

Unfortunately, I don't have the option of printing on demand, every copy is digital only. I wish I knew how or could allow for it. Of course there are outside sites that would do the printing for you.

Maztica itself is certainly official. It is a part of the Forgotten Realms and was introduced in 1991 with a boxed set and some novels. What I have done here is update the information from that era into the fifth edition. I have certainly added a ton of material and perhaps 70% of this book in particular is all new. However, I am painstakingly certain I do not contradict anything written that is canonical and what I write here is always an attempt at a logical extension of lore. I also...See more

Yes, I wrote each of the adventures. Creature Features is set in the southern jungles of the Green Folk, Blood Offering is in the jungles of Far Payit, The Mother of Life is an adventure path anthology that hits just about everywhere EXCEPT Tukan, but The Curse of Zarzumotl (cowritten by Steven St. John) just happens to be right in the House of Tezca with Tukan very close by! It's part of the adventure.

Since I just recently discovered about the Maztican lands in D&D, I started reading the books for the Maztican story. I was inspired to continue the story and update the rules to 5e myself, but you've already done most of that. I began writing somewhat of a story for the refugees who settled in Tukan to rebuild themselves. Would you be willing to collaborate and add a few more stories/campaigns?

Looks like it's time to put together an extensive update. While this book was an intensive labor of love, there are flaws that aren't aging as well as I had hoped. In the next few months keep an eye out for an update that does the following among other things...

1. Removes the tabaxi - they were updated in an official product, but I will add subraces.
2. Change jaguar and eagle knights to paladin archetypes. It fits far better than ranger as I have been told a number of times.
3. Add additional artwork if I can get my hands on it.
4. Include (and expand upon) the magic item and spell books into one massive document.
5. Fix the background and map.

If you have any other suggestions, now is definitely the time. It's also going to get another editing once over to clear the small grammatical errors that appear in the document.

This is a great supplement! I've loved using it in my campaign, and my players are loving the classes.

I have some questions about the Artisan's talisman creation feature. First, what spells can an artisan turn into talismans? I assume it's more than just their own, considering they can create up to ninth level, but is it completely unlimited?
Secondly, do the permanent talismans have a limited number of uses per day? It seems a bit overpowered if not, since even the highest level of caster can only cast so many spells per day (especially if it's being used in a setting where the PCs have plenty of down time between/during adventures).

Hello there! I’m glad you are enjoying the guide!

I am going to have to rethink the wording under the talisman crafting ability of the artisans. Eventually, there will be an update to this product that addresses other issues as well. For example, since it’s release, tabaxi got an official write up and they are far different from the tabaxi of Maztica!

The intended crafting power of the artisan was truly just to cheapen (cost-wise) the crafting of magical items that fell in their specialty (typically those dealing with pluma or hishna spells). The permanent talismans should be treated using the same guidelines that DMs use on typical item creation. You should certainly take into consideration uses per day, necessity for attunement, etc. I will be more specific with this when the errata comes out. In fact, one of my players right now happens to be a tabaxi plumaweaver!

I can't see why not. It doesn't seem like it would be particularly imbalancing, and there is precedence in the fact that wizards could perform similar magics on their familiars. PS Sorry for the incredibly delayed response. I had family health issues that necessitated I devote very little time to gaming and producing games.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
