Amber Waves of Grain--An Expanded Supplement for Goldenfields

Here's a new map of Goldenfields, the Breadbasket of the North, with supplementary material to inspire your adventures among the farmers!  Intended for use in conjunction with Princes of the Apocalypse™, it contains an original map of Goldenfields that can be printed 3 different ways (with hex versions!), a 16-page booklet guide of descriptions for the entire facility and operating structure, and mentions a few key NPCs.  It also contains adventure seeds and plot ideas for how you can use the material to jump-start developing your own adventures, and a few thoughts on dovetailing it into campaigns based on both Tyranny of Dragons™ and Rage of Demons™.

The highly detailed map comes in 6 different versions:

     • A letter-sized image

     • A letter-sized image with a hex grid

     • A poster-sized map that can be printed at large scale

     • A poster-sized map with a hex grid that can be printed at large scale

     • A 20-page print-and-assemble-at-home version that can be printed on your own home printer resulting in a 32" x 51" poster

     • Another 20-page print-and-assemble version with a hex grid that can be printed on your own home printer resulting in a 32" x 51" poster

The 16-page guide contains descriptions of various hamlets around the collectivized farming facility, plot threads to expand on for your own adventures, and explanations of just exactly how Goldenfields can be the largest operating farm on Faerün!

This variant supplement is intended for those DMs who like to have resources without being railroaded, who like to flesh out scenarios themselves and even incorporate the unique and unusual monsters they've discovered or created on their own.  This material is suitable for all levels and PCs, and offers story seeds that can keep your players busy for several adventures, as well as keep them coming back as they play other Wizards of the Coast published adventures.

I do think it's Abbot Ellardin, not Allardin and the DR1491 population is above 7.5K.
I noticed the size problem also...20 square miles would be 6.5 miles diameter (if it was a perfect circle). I do think this is minor...it's simple to just change the scale. I also agree with Simon H, there would likely be beyond-the-walls settlements...and considering the length of the perimeter, it's much more likely to be an earthen rampart topped by a low stone wall instead.

I do like the maps. Good foundation for what you are probably thinking, I should just customize to make myself happy because it is *only* a small fee. Not really reasonable to expect the sun-moon-and-stars.

Yeah, you're right. It's Abbot Ellardin Darovik who runs the farm. The population is around 5K though. And yeah it's supposed to be 20 square miles of tillage.
I noticed the size problem as well. You're right though, it's not difficult to fix the settlement to reflect that. Overall the product is good, inexpensive and a helpful template for DM's who want a bit more detail on a major settlement in the region (though one not really used in the quests).

I agree about the rampart idea as that's a lot of area to build a decent stone wall along. But they have a small army of farmers and workers who could have done the work over the years.

I bought this as the price was very reasonable and my Princes of the Apocalypse party may well find themselves at Goldenfields next session so I wanted to see what others had made of it.

It's very well presented, well written and there are some great ideas. But one thing I would definitely tinker with is the scale -
the descriptions in PotA and Forgotten Realms gazetteers state there are 'over 20 square miles' of tillage in the complex, and that this area is walled. Amber Waves of Grain has the complex at about 10 miles by 20 miles, so that's 200 square miles, ten times too much! Perhaps the author interpreted the descriptions as 20 miles a side, not area. As a result there are also frankly incredible amounts of high, thick stone wall involved (20ft high and 10 feet thick!), hundreds and hundreds of miles worth.

I personally would run the complex as being much, much smaller with a lower (8ft high, 5ft across) outer stone wall surrounding a 5x4 mile complex of fields and orchards....See more

Thanks for an awesome product! I've been tinkering with a similar setting supplement a little bit further afield in the Realms. It'd be great to chat sometime! This is my favorite product on the DMG so far.

Thanks so much for your very kinds words! This is actually the first supplement I've ever written down--I'm mostly a DM with a lot of notes and an aspirant cartographer. I just let my imagination run wild when I'm making maps for my tables...

I made this particular map because I couldn't find anything like it in any of the old Forgotten Realms materials I bought when I was searching for more info on the location. And I like having dramatic "visuals" to share with my players--it helps with their immersion and gets their imaginations going. It opens up all kinds of possibilities for them. Having made the map, I decided I'd create the document and share what I had brewing in my head all along.

I'm really enjoying this "share your creativity" thing on DMsGuild... LOL! I actually made a rudimentary map for Beliard before this one as one of my beginning cartography experiences. I then made Goldenfields, and finally a much more detailed and fleshed out version of...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
