Come and wolf down the adventure!

It’s been a long time since the people of Welton have worried about anything but sheep ticks and late frosts, but now a pack of strangely determined wolves are spiriting away entire flocks at a time and driving farmers from their fields.

With food running low and their sorcerer-in-residence nowhere to be found, the village council send out a desperate plea for brave adventurers to destroy the beasts. Is the job as easy as a walk in the woods, or is there more to the Wolves of Welton than mere animal cunning? There’s only one way to find out…

A Single-Session Adventure For Parties of 2nd-3rd level

A fresh take on the ancient 'kill ten wolves' quest that RPG fans will be so familiar with, The Wolves of Welton is designed to be played from start to finish in just one 3-6 hour session with limited preparation from the DM.

All major characters have roleplaying notes included and full-size environment maps are included.

Loved this module! I found this on google as a recommended good one for first time DMs and this slotted in nicely as a side story within the main world I participate in as a player. The players all loved it and I was able to put a few spins on it that kept them guessing. I set it during winter time and I flipped the final outcome of the sorcerer in residence to make him evil and a little cherry on top bonus encounter in the epilogue.

I ran this as a sidequest on the way to another location as a distraction and my players loved it - the town of Welton has turned into a stopping off point on the way up and down a road in our campaign and they are still engaged with what happened months later. I got put on my toes as my players thought of a different way of tackling things but very entertaining. Well worth running.

Some minor tweaks I made that players really enjoyed:

I changed the first encounter to a supply wagon rather than sheep. I used this so the players could see the wolves taking supplies that they shouldn't care about. They immediately noticed that this was not how wolves are supposed to act and they started asking questions.

I played up the fact that the sorcerer is a loner. Most people didn't know of his comings and goings, but they did know he disappeared just as this whole thing started. They initially took the bait and thought Alexi was leading them, which made the reveal of Bolt and Flame carry a bit more weight.

Since none of them knew much about magic in DnD, I placed seeds about Wild magic early on, having Father Merrikson mention that Alexi was always experimenting with magic. When the wolves describe the "lightbringing" event, they realized it must have been one of his new spells gone awry.

Other than that I just toned the encounters down to...See more

Ohhh! That's pretty good, even if it maybe tips the DM's hand a hair early. How'd your players react to that first scene? :D

Used this to launch a campaign... great way to start low-stakes but introduce some magic concepts (talking wolves!) Easy to improvise with/ build on.

For some reason, I cannot rate this adventure. However, I would like to say that I loved the story and so did my players. We found the story envolving and the ending was quite exciting for my players. Thanks a lot :)

I know most people don't know much about non-visual accessibility, but I'm hoping you can help me remedy the situation I'm in.
Blind users like myself "hear" (read) the text in this PDF as it appears below:

"It'sbeenalongtimesincethepeopleofWelton haveworriedaboutanythingmorefrightening thansheepticksoralatefrost,"

Is it possible to arrange to get a different format of this file, perhaps a copy stripped of formatting?
I'd be willing to purchase/donate again.

Hi there,

I'm in the process of converting my older work into print-friendly formats, which should hopefully help. I'll have an experiment with formatting and see if it gets easier to parse.

I'll try and get it working with the built in Adobe text-to-speech, but I don't know if that will be sufficient for more specialised programmes.

If you want to drop me a message through email (winghornpress@gmail.com) or Twitter (@winghornpress) I can send you the updated version directly. If it works okay I'll upload it here and try and sort out text-to-speech versions of my other products.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
