The Wild Sheep Chase - A Single-Session Adventure

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Do your players have the wool to survive?

Adventure, danger and a decent dose of downright weirdness erupt when the party’s attempt to grab a rare afternoon of downtime is interrupted by a frantic sheep equipped with a Scroll of Speak to Animals. Soon they are dragged into a magical grudge match that will test their strength, courage and willingness to endure extremely baa’d puns.

Will our heroes be able to overcome a band of transmuted assassins on the hunt for a mutton dinner and fend off an extremely bitter ex-apprentice packing a dangerously unstable magic item?

There’s only one way to find out…

A free single-session adventure

The Wild Sheep Chase is designed to be played from start to finish in just one 3-6 hour session with limited preparation from the DM.

All major characters have roleplaying notes included and the document comes complete with a full-size environmen.

Newly updated

Version 2.0 just released! Comes with updated art, new descriptions and a new layout. Download again, completely for free!

I really feel like this one-shot needs an update. It feels like some pieces of the story are left to interpretation and DM improvisation, while other things are needlessly detailed (like what the characters' speach mannerisms are).

1) The text says the sheep has a "Scroll of Speak with Animals (Modified)", but doesn't explain how its modified. Presumably it would affect the whole party and work for the duration of the adventure, but it should say that.

2) You have 'Speak with Animals' cast on you, but there's no information on how RP with the wolves/bear in the first encounter should go. Should the Scroll be "Speak with Sheep" instead?

3) It doesn't explain Guz's relationship to Noke (and why Noke cares about his death at all). The whirling axe thing is move is cool and all, but wouldn't it be more entertaining if the bear took Guz's role instead? Or if Guz were replaced with a talking ape, foreshadowing the others that come later?

4) Finding...See more

Can't wait to run this next week!

Does anyone know what size the map should be printed at to ensure the grid squares are 1inch?

Would it be possible to include a printer-friendly version in the future? Otherwise - this module looks like a lot of fun to run for a one-off silly adventure!

Does anyone know what size to print the map so the grid comes out to 1 inch?

Like would it work printing it out as two pieces of paper put together, or do I need to blow it up bigger?

How does Guz's whirling greatsword work? One attack roll can hit two characters in reach? Or do you roll twice to try to hit to different characters with one attack?

Just finished DMing this 1-shot an hour ago.

My players, in the end, tried to kill the sheep and eat it like a gyro. Luckily for the sheep the first attacked missed, the sheep got the highest initiative roll, and he dashed away into the distance... Gotta love these players

Hello! I have a group (total of 4 people) who is going to start out a youtube channel live play. We would like to play through this one-shot and potentially offer it as bonus material for those who support our channel through patreon. Is it okay (legal) to use this adventure?

A well put together short adventure with plenty of fun in it. Very short (I ran it yesterday with 3 players and it lasted just over 2 and a half hours) with some good motivations for the main NPCs. With a single short rest and healing potion each things balanced very nicely.

My only criticism is that it is a little linear and a little short. Essentially the adventure is one meeting and two combat encounters.

This would fit seamlessly into pretty much any campaign and (depending on the ending) provide a home base or an ally.

Hey I am starting a game dev course and I wanted to use this adventure as an inspiration for one of the game the course makes you do, as an CYOA (choose your own adventure). Don't want to plagiarize or anything, its not gonna be made into anything comertial. Also I just changed the goat with a goose to make it more comedic.

I'm a little confused.

Noke is described as working in the central platform, but shortly thereafter the combat section describes him fleeing to the central platform and locking the door if the battle seems lost.

Is he supposed to meet the characters on the garden platform? Is combat supposed to break out on the garden platform or another place?

Hey, I'm planning to run it to a complete beginner set of players and want to pre write 4 or 5 lvl4 charachters so it could be done for them in a day (that is all the group has in the summer). What composition of a group wpuld be great for it? Was thinking about Barbarian, bard, cleric, warlock, and one extra not so castery, so it wouldnt be hard on new players.

Sounds good though a party with that many full casters at level four may be tricky for new players

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
