The Leviathan's Tomb

ADD TO WISHLIST >

An ambitious lord scrambles to reclaim his family's keep, a fortress of solid iron that rises from a storm tossed sea. The true nature of the keep has been lost to time, but an ancient evil stirs beneath the waves. Will you brave flooded dungeons, face brutal sea monsters, and outwit the masters of the Leviathan's Tomb?

This is a one-shot adventure that can be set in any game world. It's incredibly tough, and will push your players to their limits. Teamwork, cunning, and courage is all you need to get through this adventure but a little luck won't hurt.

I ran this adventure in roll20 and was totally happy with it. I used it as a first adventure for my party, and I think it works great that way.

My party was a group of 5 1st level characters, but I used the scaling notes with each encounter to reduce the challenge somewhat, and it worked out almost perfectly, with a couple of hairy moments but nothing that felt unfair.

Based on my experience, though it's a fairly straightforward dungeon crawl, I suggest that DMs (especially new DMs) give the short adventure a couple of read-throughs. Trying not to give anything away here, but there are a few traps that trigger in a particular way that I didn't exactly figure out before play that I mishandled slightly during my session.

There's some great history to discover here and a solidly on-theme adventure.

My only criticism - and it's very slight - is that the adventure doesn't necessarily involve any truly compelling NPCs, but one - a local priest who's been through an...See more

Was the player map ever created? I have been checking this adventure out and I'm pretty sure I'm going to run it in Fantasy Grounds, and having a map I can plug into that would be awesome. Either way, this looks like it's going to be a great adventure. Clearly some effort went into its creation. Look forward to more of your stuff!

Wanted to double check, is this the same adventure that used to be on DTRPG published via savevsboredom?
If so, will you be releasing "The Witch's Fields" here on DMGu?

It sure is. If you bought it twice on accident, and didn't get a refund, let me know and I'll send you something for your trouble. As for Witch's Fields, I am afraid that is simply begging to be overhauled for Curse of Strahd. Hey, want to playtest it when it's ready?

Just downloaded. Looks cool, but you should note that it is designed for a party of 5 3rd level characters. There are adjustment notes for weaker or stronger parties. It appears that every encounter has a blurb detailing how to adjust the difficulty up or down. Kudos!

Thanks! Also note this thing is tough. Everyone needs a gimmick and mine is 'Dark Souls of D&D.' So enter the Iron Keep at your peril! Not all of the monsters in the 5e Monster Manual appear in the OGL so I got creative with a few to avoid IP issues. Hope you enjoy!

This document looks very professional, and the map looks beautiful. I have not had a chance to read through it carefully yet, but the adventure looks very interesting, good job!

Hey, when I try to download this I get "FAILED - The requested source file could not be found.: d:/RawPDFs/rpg/Dungeon Masters Guild/SVB001_LeviathansTomb_DMGuild.pdf". I have downloaded other pdfs from this site with no issue. Any idea what is going on?

Seems like there was a bug with the system, it should be OK now. Feel free to send me an email at savevsboredom@gmail.com and I will send you our other adventures for free since you had a problem. Hope you enjoy it!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
