1.3 changes! After a long time of amassing feedback from the community while this has been in the wild, I made a rather large overhaul to how this class' progression lays out, and how Trick Shots are acquired!

1) All of the various special Shots the Gunslinger can make are now considered "Trick Shots" that can be selected from the list as you level up, similar to the Battle Master. This enables a chance for players to customize the style of their Gunslinger far more based on which trick shots they choose as they progress.

2) I've rebalanced the Trick Shots, making some more useful, and making previous high-level features now available at any level, but balanced for it.

3) Added Bullying Shot as a social trick shot to aid in Intimidation attempts.

4) Clarified that the recovery of Grit based on killing a creature is viable only if the creature is a significant threat (at the DM's discretion).

5) Added the 10th level feature "Rapid Repair" that allows the gunslinger to attempt a repair as a bonus action.

6) Added ammunition costs for each weapon, as well as rules for the cost of crafting ammunition.

7) Removed the Scattergun and Scatter properties (as the design was a little unwieldy), but you are welcome to still use them from the previous itterations!

8) Added a Palm Pistol option as a firearm with the light property (for an off-handed shot).

9) Added a Blunderbuss to the firearm list.

GUNSLINGER

Martial Archetype for Fighters

Most warriors and combat specialists spend their years perfecting the classic arts of swordplay, archery, or polearm tactics. Whether duelist or infantry, martial weapons were seemingly perfected long ago, and the true challenge is to master them.

However, some minds couldn’t stop with the innovation of the crossbow. Experimentation with alchemical components and rare metals have unlocked the secrets of controlled explosive force. The few who survive these trivals of ingenuity may become the first to create, and deftly wield, the first firearms.

This archetype focuses on the ability to design, craft, and utilize powerful, yet dangerous ranged weapons. Through creative innovation and immaculate aim, you become a distant force of death on the battlefield.

Inspired by converting from the Pathfinder class, retooled and altered for 5e and making it more my own, I hope you enjoy.

So how does the Light property work on this palm pistol? Because RAW says that the light weapon has to be a melee weapon to be dual wielded.

There is an accompanying feat that will be released in the near future that enables this feature's usefulness (might like the Crossbow Expert)

Does the vicious intent feature regain a grit point form all attack rolls that land on 19 or 20 or just on firearms?

Just on Firearms, technically.

Is there a way to get the 1.2 version of the archtype or do i just need to use the download on my old laptop?

I've been wondering why you chose to make this as a Martial Archetype for Fighters, I feel like it would fit better as it's own class. I'm sure you have very good reasons, so I would like to hear them!

From my standpoint, "using firearms" wasn't a large enough thematic difference to constitute its own class. Mind you, you could totally expand upon it and do so! However, for the purposes of my campaign, it made more sense to design it in the realm of being a Fighter archetype (A class whose mastery of weapons and warfare make them adaptable and dangerous).

Hey Matt if a player wanted to dual wield some of these guns, would you make a separate feat for that like a Gun version of Crossbow Expert or change the Crossbow Expert feat to allow one-handed weapons alongside hand crossbows?

Does the Scattergun receive the typical ranged disadvantage on targets within melee range? Doesn't say otherwise but seems to fit...

I have a player using this class in a campaign I'm running, and I'm looking for some input on how to do the crafting process for Bad News. For the building of the gun I would have the player do a series of tinkering checks, but I was wondering how other people have worked through the design process of the gun. Would it make sense to have the character make a tinkering check periodically for designing Bad News, or does that seem too tedious? Also, around what level do you think it would be appropriate for the crafting process to complete and have the player finish Bad News? Since it is so powerful I don't want the character getting access to it too early. Any input would be appreciated!

For the gunslinger that I am playing, I was allowed to make one attempt a level at creating the parts. They were broken up to four checks so I could make 1 check per part per level. Stock, barrel, ammo, firing mechanism with higher DC's depending on how intricate. I think the stock was DC 18 and the firing mechanism was DC 25. The idea was to have me get the gun around level 8 due to damage scaling.

Thanks Victor, I appreciate the input. That process makes a lot of sense, and I like the idea of scaling DCs depending on how intricate each component is. Level 8 seems like it would be a good time for introducing Bad News, I was concerned it would get introduced too early and have this character majorly outstrip the others in terms of power.

What is the crafting cost for bad news and hand mortar? It just says they are craftable but doesn’t give the cost in mats players need to spend to make them.

Thanks for creating and sharing this “archetype.” Earlier tonight I was trying to create a gunslinger class because I love the Dark Tower novels, Tomb Stone, and Clint Eastwood. Then, I googled it and found and bought your offering! I am so impressed.

(I gave been a gamer and DM for a long time. I started with the first edition (i.e., Basic Set (colored red), the Expert Set (colored blue), and finally “Advanced D&D” and all the books and modules to followed. I’m a rebel so I resisted the editions that followed but later got the fourth edition to bring my son into the game. Fun at first then it felt like and action game. I was disappointed. This new/5th Edition is very close to the original so “I’m in!”)

I was initially using another class and altering it to fit someone like Roland of the Line of Eld. Then I went to Google and found this! THANKS.

I’m OC like many of us.

Here are some idea/questions:

Would it be too OP to allow Crossbow Expert to work on ignoring the reload?

Personally in my games when I allow the Gunslinger, I don't allow Crossbow Expert to cancel out the reloading property of firearms as it makes the lvl.15 ability for Gunslingers (Lightning Reload) obsolete and breaks the immersion of the game as it brings to mind a machine gun, assault rifle or automatic shotgun which isn't appropriate for the level of technology that is generally available within the usual fantasy settings of D&D.

I do however allow the other two aspects of Crossbow Expert to apply to firearms as that negates the idea of a misfire occurring because you are too close to your target and allows you create a greater variety of character types such as classic cutlass and pistol pirates and darkest dungeon like highwaymen.

My GM from an old game I played had me take a musket apart that I stole from an NPC and remake it into a pistol (I had to give a lot of blood as currency to do it but...)
The creator of this class runs a game where the character running this class option received a vision in a dream and designed his first firearm after waking up.
So, yeah, it's up to your GM. Just toss some ideas at them and see what sticks. Hope this was helpful! :)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
