Amid the skills a character can have none is as useful as herbalism; from healing to killing, a well trained herbalist can create brews that cure disease or cause the heart to stop, they heal the righteous or inflict pain on the wicked. All this and more through the knowledge of herbalism.

With over 20 pages of new rules, 25 new items to craft, as well as a complete list of ingredients, their known powers, and the ways to develop more items, this is the definitive rule set for the use of the herbalism skill and a must have for any player with the skill or Dungeon Master with a resourceful villian to equip.

Hi Chris, I purchased this and wow... really impressive and enjoyable to read through. Best resource on herbalism out there in my opinion. I had a quick question if you have a minute- one of my players wants to use pumpkins and pumpkin seeds (we are about to do the wbtwl campaign in the Feywild, so it seems appropriate). Do you have any thoughts on what pumpkin flesh and pumpkin seeds might be used for in terms of sphere and/or formula? Thank you so much!

Christopher B, first and foremost my apologies for not replying sooner-I only saw this comment in my account page having never received an alert- I do usually respond very quickly.
Pumpkin seeds and pumpkin flesh would be great ingredients! I think the seed could be the sphere of negative/positive energy depending upon when it was harvested-possibly by a full moon for negative and by midday sun for positive. The flesh would be a solid sustenance sphere item. As for formulas, the sky is the limit with access to 3 spheres from one item. I have many ideas and want to share them with you. If this campaign is ongoing and your player is still interested in using this ingredient send me an email address and I will share my thoughts and ideas in a word document and send you links to all my other works for as complimentary copies.

This is PRECISELY what I needed -- realistic, engaging, complex enough to feel like a game to my players, simple enough to be flexible. I'm a new GM but I am running this game for my whole family (yes, even the five year old) and I want it to center on their characters as people, not on combat. My druid is gonna be ecstatic. :D

Hawthorne l, I am super excited I provided you with what you needed. I have several other rule sets which work on a similar dynamic and I sincerely hope that you check them out. The game should be ever expanding and ever evolving, taking a shape to represent what the players and the DM dream up together to craft an amazing story of a world that exists in our hearts; I am very fortunate to be included in your design and want to thank you for sharing your excitement with me. If there is any other rule set you want to expand let me know and I am happy to help. The first campaign we run is often the hardest, but it is also the one we remember forever for it often has incredible miscalculations on our part and ridiculous turns of events for which we could never have had a plan and it always has the ah hah moment in which you realize that players devise the most crazy solutions to avoid your best laid plans. I have several other rule sets, a spell guide, 3 magic item sets, and a role play piece all available on this...See more

Still a newer DM who kind of stumbled into the hobby and am running my first campaign for a group of 7 new players. We've been going for a bit and I'm starting to look into different aspects of making toolkits etc more useful/interesting and i think this might be the ticket. Appreciate the work you put in there.

Hey Chris, another Chris here. I can't tell you how much I appreciate this document. One of my players showed me this beauty during a recent session and I absolutely fell in love. We started using it right away, and I will never regret using this. I can't wait to use this as a player, once I deal with my ForeverDM syndrome of course.

Hi Chris, the offer does still stand, it does not have an expiration date.If you are interesting in meeting the terms of the agreement, which are that you will always use the provided products to expand your game in an effort to widen the horizon and possibilities of your table than I am willing to offer you a complimentary copy of each of my works for you to use. I offer them to you freely, because if you use them then someone else will be exposed to them and hopefully they will in turn come to this site and get their own copy and show it to some other table of gamers. I know, I could offer them freely to everyone-I don't- because I have one piece that I do make the offer and I find that every month 200+ people want to pay nothing; which is not fair to me or the management of this site, who receive 50% of the sales price while they do all the work of running an incredibly large site that has incredibly awesome products. As for sending me your email, that is easy email me at dmsguilds@outlook.com. I will then...See more

Hi Chris...it's Chris again. I disappeared from the space for a little bit and read your comments. Just wanted to tell you that I appreciate what you do, and I bought some of your stuff earlier last year. Apologies for leaving you hanging. Let's just say life got in the way and took a turn for the worse. But I am working on it. Anyways, thanks a bunch. (Also, you're works; Alchemy, Herbalism, Potioneering, Blacksmithing, Rod and Jewelry making have become staples for my groups. Thanks.)

Which edition of D&D is this best for? 5e?

Terrence, This system should play under any of version from AD&D to V5(e), the system is not version specific. It will also work with the Pathfinder system fairly well.

By rules that each creator should read, Each creation should be made for 5th Edition. It cannot use any source from any previously created edition because of copyright laws, EXCEPT basic Player Handbooks, DM Guides, and Monster Manuals. any expanded version in previous edition are off limits. If not specifically stated in the Creation time, each item should be considered to be 5th Edition. Sorry for the lengthy response, but these rules are stated if a person were to look. Not being rude, not assuming you haven't looked. Just stating it's a safe assumption and giving the reason why.

Stefen, you are correct and this rule set was designed for V5(e) and is used in V5(e) in my games. As it is a role-play aspect of the game or a "down-time activity", it should play in any edition equally well. The rule set does not use any source from any edition, except to cite the PHB V5(e) for the tool "Herbalism Kit". Thank you for the comment, your time has value and your thoughts are worth being expressed; I trust that you downloaded a copy and found it to be acceptable within the community content rules and usable in your game.

Jared, I specifically did not include a list because the ingredients are likely cultivated by herbalists around the world to produce the ingredients they need the most and I wanted to leave the DM the freedom to include any ingredients as they saw fit. Perhaps as I receive more feedback and finish my next project I will create a general table for random foraging based upon rarity level which will be helpful for you but still not a firm rule and add that update to the upload which you will be able to receive for free.

Excellent Chris - just collected the PDF! The original Word file was problematic as it seemed to use fonts I don't have.

A quick check through the new Herbalism PDF might suggest a minor adjustment of the tables near the end would be useful. Some of the table lists continue onto the next page, but without the column headings. This is OK on-screen, but in a printout version, it'll be less comfortable. Similarly, it may be helpful to add page numbers, again as a printout version means you have a sheaf of papers but no easy way to reorganise them if you lose track of their correct sequence.

Also, the "Columbine" line at the end of page 14 is in a sans-serif font, unlike the rest of the Ingredients list.

The cover illustration remains problematic. I'd guess it was scanned at too low a resolution originally. If that can't be rectified, it may be worth checking some of the copyright-free images from something like Culpeper's Herbal available online. I'd especially recommend...See more

Alastair, I have revamped the end tables to sit on a page when printed without carrying over to the next page. There are now page numbers as well. Columbine has been fixed as well, not sure how that one went wrong, but it was a good catch for sure. The opening picture is a low res photo; most photos have copyrights and I am touchy about using something without permission, I removed it altogether as it served no purpose but to be a title page. Thank you for the editing advice, I can always use a good editor. I am starting the next project and want to thank you with a complimentary copy of it, as the dmsguild does not have personal boxes for us, I have set up a junk email you can send your address to if you decide to do so: dmsguild@outlook.com

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
