Avast ye cack-handed deck apes! This be the Dark Caribbean!

This 74-page bookmarked supplement provides a host of monsters and NPCs that pirates and scallywags are likely to encounter on their voyages across haunted waters and raucous ports of call. Additionally, detailed encounter tables provide you with a rich swashbuckling milieu and just the right touch of horror and mystery to spice up the characters' adventures.

A great supplement for your nautical adventures in Ghosts of Saltmarsh!

The full preview allows you to see over half of the supplement. However, here is what you can expect to discover within the pages of The Buccaneer's Bestiary:

  • 26 pages of encounter tables covering ports of call, sea encounters, island encounters, undersea encounters, and encounters in the dreaded Abyss.
  • Writeups on 15 generic NPCs suitable as crew, officers, and spellcasters aboard the characters' ship, or as adversaries.
  • Writeups on 35 beasties ranging from the lowly Jenny Hanniver and comical Skull Crab (CR 1/8) to the awe-inspiring Giant Nautilus (CR 13) and horrific Wastrilith (CR 14).
  • Two new templates for the mischievous dancing Dry Bones Skeleton and the cursed Seaclaimed Creature.
  • An index of all NPCs and beasties organized by CR.

And here is the list of just the new monsters in The Buccaneer's Bestiary for quick reference:

Hi, I was wondering if there is a print friendly version (no background) included?

Just bought and downloaded this. The PDF is completely white. I have 74 blank pages. I can drag my courser across and highlight stuff but it still just blocks of highlight no text or images.

Edit: I can open the PDF with Chrome and see it, but I'd like to be able to see it when I open it with Adobe.

Hi Christopher. I'm the author. I haven't encountered that issue before, and I open the current version of the file just fine with Acrobat Reader DC version 2018.011.20040.

I have heard people run into that issue using Acrobat 2017 (at work, not with this product), so if your Acrobat isn't current, I'd suggest updating?

If all else fails, I can email you a pdf copy?

I have a minor problem with the seaclaimed section. Many of the abilities lack details such as whether an action is needed to use the ability or the duration of the ability's effects (Sea Lure, Drown), while others are WAY too powerful (Jellyfish Tentacles, Stingray Tail). Also, it would make more sense to recalculate a creatures CR rather than assign hard increases to its CR.

Sure! As long as you're not outright copying text from the product, feel free to use "The Buccaneer's Bestiary" in your campaign blog! That's what gaming and DM's Guild is all about — sharing ideas and improving our games. Linking back is appreciated. If you have further questions you can reach me at aaronil[at]yahoo[dot]com.

Thanks for catching that Michael. One was a slightly older version where I caught a few niggling errors, the other was more recent. It's fixed now! Just one file! I'm cutting my teeth figuring out how OneBookShelf handles the whole publisher process, so this was my rookie mistake :)

Hey, just a word from the wise you may not want to have your whole product viewable in the preview. People can download that file without having to purchase your very well done content. Also, if you dont mind me asking, what program did you use to create those tables, images, and background?

Hi Christian. Originally, I wanted folks to have the feel of thumbing through a new book at a bookstore where you can peruse a book at your leisure, but several folks have said the same thing to me. So I've limited the full preview to 44 of the 74 pages.

Normally I work in the Adobe suite (doing layout in InDesign), but believe it or not I did the layout entirely in Mac Pages! However, I'm told Microsoft Word can accomplish much the same look. Not sure about LibreOffice.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
