The Dragon Knight Class

ADD TO WISHLIST >
Suggested Price $1.00

Many an adventurer has had to experience the pure terror of facing a dragon in combat.  Their immense power and strength has left more than one party reconsidering their life choices.  Now, the players can harness that power themselves with the new Dragon Knight Class.

Inspired by those awesome creatures, the Dragon Knight can emulate some of their abilities while adding brand new options to the game. Each calling has its own unique weapon that it uses to unleash their power. Transform into a winged hybrid, inspire fear in your opponents, and even unleash some of your Dragon Master's breath weapon on your foes today!

I've added a new Draconic Calling, which you can download HERE

You can find the new Monk Tradition I wrote HERE

Update 1.1:

I made some minor changes to text to improve the clarity and keep things consistant throughout the documen. I added the save DC formula to the Draconic Power section and removed the repeats of it in the rest of the document to streamline it and added a breath weapon column to the Dragon damage type table for ease of use

I also added new cover art.  Feel free to ask any questions you have down below.

Update 1.2:

I made some changes to clarify certain features, improve balance, and add some lore.

The Winged Spear of the Dragoon is now clasified as a ranged weapon that can perform melee attacks to better fit with the theme of the weapon.

The Dragon Transformation extra damage has been editing to state that it only applies to non-Dragon Attack weapon attacks unless specifically stated in the description of the dragon attack.

The Dragon Breath feature has been renamed Gift of the Dragon and now includes that that Dragon Knight cannot die of old age while their master lives.

Most of the Draconic calling features have been renamed to better differentiate the dragon attacks from the other benefits of the features.

Update 1.3

Just some minor changes.  Added that the telepathic communication between your Dragon Master and you must be initiated by your Dragon Master to deal with a few instances of people abusing the ability to attempt to get more information than they should have in a given situation.  Also added that, if you choose the Javelins as part of your starting equipment, you can treat them as if they have the finesse property to better fit the dex-based dragon knights.

Update 1.4

Some more significant changes, based on feedback.

  • Changed the wording in the Draconic power Section to better fit with the style of the PHB.
  • Removed the +1 to AC from the Double Blade weapon feature to better fit with the theme of the Warblade.
  • Changed the description of the Dragon Transformation text to better align it with 5e wording.
  • Changed the limitation of Dragon Transformation from "once per encounter" to "you must wait 10 minutes before you can activate this ability again..." to better align it with 5e wording and style.
  • Added "On a success, they take half damage." to the end of the Hurricane Blade Dragon Attack.
  • Added "This movement does not provoke opportunity attacks." to the description of the Dragon Charge Dragon Attack.
  • Removed references to "Dual Blade" as that was an earlier wording for the Double Blade that I decided didn't describe the weapon well.

Huge thank you specifically to Jean-François L and Joshua M for the massive amount of help they gave me in this specific update.

Update 1.5:

A few changes:

  • After feedback from my own players and seeing the class played, I decided the Dragon Transformation wasn't really working as intended. It was meant to be something that could be used in tandem with the dragon attacks, but with how short it lasted that really wasn't possible. So now, the initial transformation is a flat 30 seconds and Extended Transformation allows you to spend 2 points instead of 1 to make the transformation last 1 minute instead of 30 seconds, but it still has the 10 minute cooldown period between transformations to prevent abuse. I've been having one of my players run the class this way for months now and it hasn't proven to create any balance issues, but feel free to comment on the page if you notice it unbalances the class at your table and I'll make appropriate changes to keep the balance.
  • Changed the title of Horde's bane so that it used the proper word for Horde.
  • Added some clarification in the paired shield section to explain that magic shields with bonuses to AC also add that bonus to attack and damage rolls when changed into the Paired Shields.
  • Added the ability for the Warblade to make shove attacks at range with Improved Tenacity to better align it with the other level 10 abilities.

Thanks to David B for pointing out some of the changes needed, especially catching that I used the wrong word for horde.

Update 1.6

After considering this for years now and learning and discecting D&D 5e class design, I have made the decision to make one final change to the Dragon Knight Class. In 5e, each class should play differently and have certain things that define the class, making it a unique experience. According to accepted 5e design pracitices, those defining features should show up in the first 2 levels. For this class, one of the defining features is the Dragon Weapon and thus far the player has had to wait to get to 3rd level to get that. So, I decided to move the Dragon Weapon Feature to 1st level, which also involves moving the choice of Calling to 1st level as well. Nothing else about the callings has changed. You still get your first dragon attack at 3rd level and everything else remains the same.

Since it's no longer needed, I removed the text in the Equipment section that stated you could use the pike as if it had the finesse property. I also added to each Dragon Weapon that you are proficient with the Dragon Weapon.

Really happy how popular this has been, even 4 years later, and, as always, feel free to ask any questions or leave any comments down below.

Hello there, I've adored this class for a very long time and wondered if it would be OK for me to upload it onto 5e.tools for my campaign to use? All credit and links back to this page of course.

My contract with DMsGuild is they are the sole publisher of this document, so I can't agree to let it be published anywhere else. 5etools publishes copywritten materials so I would prefer my content not appear there in any way shape or form. It is pay what you want here, so I don't really see a reason anyone wouldn't be able to pick it up here for use, and it ensures that I get to keep the creative control over it that I want. So, no I will not give my permission to upload this to another site, and specifically don't want this showing up on 5etools. I do appreciate you asking though. It's been surprising how many people have though simply by downloading this they can post it wherever they want, which is not ok.

there's a typo in the 1.6 revision under Draconic Presence,"After using this ability, you must complete a short

Originally Dragon Transformation was a separate action but it wasn't able to be used the way I envisioned it so I changed it to activate when you take the attack action so it could be combined with dragon attacks, but it has always been intended that it could be used outside of combat for the flight ability. I think I'll change it to "As an action or when you take the attack action" to restore its out of combat use. Thanks for pointing this out!

Hey

Hope someone can help me. Got confused with Vortex Slash. It is said that all Dragon Attacks don't get bonus Dragon Dice damage from Dragon Transformation and Dragon Pact. So that means that you do 4 attacks without that bonus dices? Do you get bonus from proficiency?

Thanks

Vortex slash is basically making 4 regular attacks, so whatever dice you would roll for a regular attack, you roll for each vortex slash attack. You don't get additional damage from Dragon Transformation or your dragon pact, but since those attacks count as Dragon Attacks, they would all score a crit on a roll of 18, 19, or 20. Still a pretty powerful attack even without the extra dice. Did that answer your question?

Hey LOVE the class (and a player in my group will be playing it starting friday) but I have 2 questions about the warblades Double Weapon:
1st: does the weapon retain the properties of it's attached weapons for instance: if you combine two rapiers does the war blade have the finesse ability? (my assumption is no but wanted to double check since this seems thematically more dex then str focused)
2nd: if you use a versatile weapon such as the long sword, does it use the d8 or d10 damage dice since you're now forced to wield it with 2 hands. (my assumption is again d8 but my player will ask so figured I'd check with you)

1st answer: The only non-magic aspects of the original weapon that carry over are the damage type and the damage die, no other properties. So no, the Double Blade isn't a finesse weapon. This aspect is actually meant to be thematically a strength focused class, not dex. As much as a lot of people think Dex when they think speed, one of my hobbies is staff spinning and getting that thing up to speed takes a TON of strength, compared to something like nun-chucks which require more control and precise movement than brute strength. All the dragon attacks are meant to invoke a sense of power behind them, not really fine control. That's one of the reasons why cyclone strike hits every creature, not just enemies. The Warblade is using their strength to make a large attack, but has to sacrifice control to do it. The rest of the dragon attacks fit along that line of thought as well.

2nd answer: With versatile weapons, you use the 1 handed damage die because, despite the fact that you're now using a 2-handed...See more

For multi-classing I notice you allow str or dex and I'm unsure as to why because using this calling would make dex builds gimped. If you're going to allow str or dex then why not transfer over the properties as well so the wielder can decide what kind of swords to use such as finesse or not. For instance I'm a multi-class dual wield dex ranger that would like to use this calling but would be under powered in comparison to a str person using this calling. Please change or can you make a custom one for a price?

Sorry for the late response, didn't see this until just now.

The Multi-class dex requirements is for people who want to multi-class the Dragoon or the Warlord as both of those dragon weapons are finesse and those callings are designed to be dex based. The Warblade was never designed to be a dex based class as I explained in my previous post and, from a mechanical standpoint, it doesn't really make sense for a double weapon to be finesse. Take a rapier, for example. The reason it's dex based is because it causes damage through really accurate strike with the tip of the blade. When fencing, you actually do use your off hand, especially when you lunge, as a counter balance. When you lunge, you thrust your off hand backwards so that, after the lunge, you can swing it up and use that momentum to bring you back to your regular fighting stance. Without it, you would be stuck in the lunge position until you used a hand on the floor or something else to lift you back up or dropped the rapier.

Now,...See more

For your second question, The Double Blade does not use the two-weapon fighting rules and, therefor, can't benefit from the dual wielder feat. However, everything except the +1 to AC is already built into the class eventually, so you don't really need it. An earlier version of the class had it getting the +1 to AC as well, but it made the calling a little too tanky and didn't fit with the theme of the class, so I changed it to better balance the calling against the other ones and the core classes.

You're the first person to ask if you're proficient with your dragon weapon and I can't believe I never thought of that. Yes, you are proficient in it, and I may have to add something to the class to clarify that. As far as being overpowered, +1 AC isn't that massive a deal, but it didn't really go with the theme of the calling. The warblade is all about offense, to the point that they will sacrifice defense for more power. So it just made more sense to get rid of that part.

Hey Jodie,

I'm a huge fan of the class and love the concept behind it, especially the Warblade option. But, I was wondering, if the Warblade's dragon weapon weren't the Double Blades but instead a Greatsword, how would you balance it without changing the overall design and purpose of the class?

So, first off, sorry this took so long. Been preoccupied with some other stuff.

The Double Blade is meant to be the equivalent of dual wielding as far as mechanics go. So, the regular fix to that would be to take away the bonus action attack and use the higher dice of the greatsword, since that's what you would do if a a fighter or paladin went from dual wielding to a 2-handed weapon. However, that would cause issues with just about all the dragon attacks since they're based off the attacks of a one-handed weapon, so you'd instantly be increasing their power by quite a bit, from 1d8 max to 2d6. Completely converting the Warblade to a calling that works with a greatsword would take a ton of time and wouldn't really be in the spirit of the calling. I would say using a greatsword or other 2-handed weapon as the basis for a dragon weapon would be a completely different calling and not something you could do with some minor changes to the Warblade.

That being said, if you have a player who's...See more

I had a few minor foibles I wanted to point out, to help make this class even better:

1. I saw when reading through these discussions that the Defender's shields benefit from the source shield's enhancement bonus to attack and damage as well, and I feel like that should be more clearly explained.
2. I feel like calling the Warblade's signature weapon the "Double Blade" is a bit misleading, since you can theoretically make one from any two one handed weapons, and they retain their prior damage types, so you can create a "Double Blade" that is made from a warpick and a club, for example, neither of which are particularly blade-y.
3. "Hoard's Bane" seems to be mispelled, based on it being in reference to slaying hordes of enemies, and not hoards as in masses of valuables.
4. Improved tenacity feels rather... underwhelming, compared to what the other subclasses get. It just feels odd to me that the whirling dervish of death gains the power to.... move a...See more

First of all, wow.... just wow... Great catches. Not a single one that didn't make me at least pause to consider it.
1. Makes sense, just need to figure out how to word it in the description of the paired shields.
2. I kind of based it on the same principle as the bladesinger description. Their fighting style is the blade song, despite the fact that they don't have to use a blade at all. In fact, one of the styles specifically mentioned is a whip style, which has no blade. So, the reason it's called a double blade is the vast majority of weapons used to create the double blade have a blade of some sort, and it sounds nicer than "Double Weapon."
3. You are absolutely right. I completely missed that I used the wrong word for horde. That will be another thing I change in the final update.
4. Improved Tenacity was a tough one since the other 2 classes had pretty obvious things that fed into their chosen skill. It just made sense for the Dragoon to run on walls since they were designed...See more

Hi! Wow, this looks like so much fun! I started reading this, and I decided very quickly that I either really want to play as a Dragon Knight, or DM for a player who's playing as a Dragon Knight. He's some of my thoughts and feedback.

Full disclosure of my inexperience: I have not played D&D much at all. My actual gameplay experience amounts to playing a Level 1 Rogue (Assassin) in a short-lived 3.5e game that didn't go anywhere, playing a Level 1 Rogue (Assassin) in a 5e one-shot my friend put on, playing a Level 4 Druid (Circle of the Land) in another 5e one-shot a friend was putting on (that we hope to turn into a longer game), and running a single 5e one-shot with two players who both played Level 4 Fighters (Champion and Eldritch Knight). With that said, I have watched 500+ hours of the game being played on the show Critical Role, which familiarized me with the game and taught me 95% of what I know about how to play it, but I only really learned about the very specific classes and archetypes...See more

Hi Reuben,

I haven't had the chance to run this class yet, but have discussed it a lot with Jodie, so I think I can give you pointers for all your questions, which Jodie will be able to correct if I am wrong.

Dragon Pact bonus action
When you activate your Dragon Pact, you effectively replace your damage type to your dragon's damage type. The reason why you may want to cancel it early is that you may be facing an enemy that has resistance or even immunity to your dragon's damage type. If you had to keep this type for a certain duration, you would be at a great disadvantage.

Dragon Strike
When you gain the dragon strike ability, you increase the potency of your attacks when you use your dragon pact ability. Essentially, you add 1 damage die, based on the Dragon Die in the class table on page 3. So by level 11, you dragon die is 1d8, so if you attacked with a shortsword, you would deal 1d6 + 1d8 damage, the type being your dragon's damage type.

If you...See more

Okay, thanks for confirming. That's what I thought.

Dragon Strike
The final sentence of your response is just as confusing (to me) as the final paragraph in the feature description. It's just that so many details pile up it's so hard to keep track of everything. This is why I'll never play a game of 3.5 again. It's impossible to keep track of how anything works. Heh. Maybe I'll keep reading Dragon Strike over and over until it makes sense.

Death From Above / Fall Damage
Okay, but does the Aerial Strike cause fall damage? That's really what I was asking. You words would seem to imply the answer is yes.

Hi Reuben, sorry for not being able to help further. I'll try to clarify things :)

The first thing of note with this class is that a lot of the abilities are linked, which can complicate things a bit if you don't have a very good grasp of the class.

Dragon Strike
When you get your Dragon Pact, as a bonus action, you can replace the damage type of your weapon by your dragon's damage type. So, example with the Shortsword again, instead of doing 1d6 piercing, you now do 1d6 fire (if you have a Dragon Pact with a Red Dragon). When you gain Dragon Strike at level 11, you instead do the 1d6 fire (weapon damage) + 1d8 (dragon die). For the Dragon Transformation, I'll give you an example in combat:

First round:
You move to your target to be in melee range with it. You first use your Bonus Action to activate your Dragon Pact ability. You then use your Action to attack, giving you 2 weapon attacks (Extra Attack at level 5). On your first attack, you activate your Dragon...See more

So, first things first, I'm really sorry it's taken me so long to answer these. Normally I get a notification when someone comments here and I never got any notifications about these comments. That being said, I'd like to thank Jean-Francois for his help answering your questions while I was unaware of them. Now, to the questions themselves.

Dragon Pact/Strike is basically just the ability to change the damage type of a weapon. For example, a longsword does slashing damage. By activating your Dragon Strike ability, the Longsword stops doing slashing damage and does your master's damage type instead. It's a really simple way to get around damage resistances/immunities at low levels. At level 11, Paladins can add 1d8 damage to every attack they do, and some clerics get that ability at level 8, so Dragon strike adding a dragon damage die to your attacks was meant to keep them in line with paladins and clerics. Dragon transformation adds another dragon die damage, since there should be an increase in damage...See more

Wow that's a good question... Never thought about that... So, if you are proficient with a magic weapon that requires attunement, you can still just pick up that weapon, without attuning to it, and use it as a normal weapon. You simply don't get any of the magical benefits of that weapon. It just acts like a regular sword until you attune to it. Based on that, I would say that no, you don't have to be attuned to the magic weapon you turned into your Dragon Weapon, but, by not attuning to it, it would act as if it were just a plain, regular weapon. No bonuses to hit or damage, no magical features, etc. Again, the Dragon Weapon is not meant to give you a mechanical advantage or disadvantage, it's meant to flavor the class and help make it play very different from other classes, so in general I tend to err on the side of whatever would give you the same mechanical benefit or disadvantage any other class would have in order to keep the class balanced and fair when compared to other classes. Draconic Voracity, as with all the 18th level abilities, is just flavor text to describe how the corresponding dragon attack works. In this instance, it's just referring to how fast the dragon knight can swing his/her blade in order to make 4 attacks in the space of one attack when using Vortex Slash. It doesn't mean you get 6 attacks every turn. The Vortex Slash attack is designed to replace 1 of the 2 attacks you get when you take the attack action with 4 attacks.

For example. Let's say I'm playing a dragon knight Level 18 and it's my turn to attack. I take the attack action, which means I have 2 attacks I can make due to the Extra Attack feature. Now, I decide I need to up my damage, so I replace 1 of those attacks with the Vortex Slash dragon attack. So, I make 4 attacks against a single creature and spend 1 draconic power point. I still have 1 more attack left, so I make that attack as well, giving me a total of 5 attacks this round thus far and that completes my attack action. I still have...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
