Evolving Items

I always liked the idea of a character bonded with a particular weapon (something like a family sword), but the magic objects can become a bit useless if the player found a better one. The idea of this is to create a base magic item that evolves when the player level up (and optionally when he/she finish a series of tasks or when a triggering event occurs).

The items are divided in 5 tiers (depending on the rarity of the object) and each one has a number of properties with a particular level of each property (from I to III-IV).

Just downloaded this! I was very inspired by it, and plan on using the system to create essentially a pokeball that turns a Wizard’s familiar into a Pokémon. Rather than making the initial item mundane, I’m giving it a tier one benefit (Allowing the familiar to be recalled and take a long rest to heal rather than disappearing after it drops to zero hp, which I think is a small enough power to be a common magic item). After that though I plan to give quests to allow the familiar to evolve like a Pokémon, gaining benefits according to your system.

Evolving Items Notes:

Considering this is a 2nd revision, I would expect what's written below to have been ironed out by now, especially the very next paragraph.

No WotC Legals; no Credits for editor, proofreader, layout, design format template; no contact details (email), apart from a redirect to a Reddit Forum page, to contact the writer for questions, enquiries, etc.

Needs an independent set of eyes to go over this to correct punctuation and grammar.

It would be nice to know what the playtesters think / thought of the system but as none are mentioned, the implication is that the system hasn't been tested before publication.

The fact that you've included a sample item to show how the system works is good. I would like to have seen more choice, and the tables listed by rarity instead of alphabetical as the system relies on level progression.

It would be good to see a 3rd revision of this, including the missing sections above. An...See more

First, thanks for the comment and rating!

I still need to modify this a bit more (lately I've been working on other brews), and I'll add what you mention in the future versions ;)

I'll check the grammar and punctuation again (english isn't my first language, but I'll do my best to fix typos and grammar).

I've been testing the system for a while now with two groups, but probably there are more reddit users who can actually give me a bit more of feedback for balancing.

I'll add more samples if needed and I'll modify the tables too.

thanks again for the comment!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
