The Ranger Reborn

Wilderness survival comes down to more than just how many spells you know.

Because you don't have enough options to fix the ranger yet, I'm offering another one. Trust me though, this is one you'll want to see because it will either make you furious about what I have done or make you fall in love with the ranger all over again.

This variant on the ranger class very nearly completely redesigns what was presented in the PHB. The new options here shine a spotlight on the ranger as a wilderness survivalist dedicated to erradicating a few chosen foes that threaten the lands they inhabit.

Be sure to check the previews out, but here's a summary of what has changed:

  • Spells are gone (not entirely, as you'll see)
  • Favored Enemy mechanics are significantly expanded so that your choice opens up unique options, very similar to the ones from the Hunter archetype
  • Favored Terrain bonuses are more flexible so that you can apply some of your skill to other environments
  • Hit and run tactics from the Unearthed Arcana playtest are used and combat styles are broadened

In addition, the class was kept compatible with the existing ranger archetypes. Inside you'll find the new Dragonslayer and Warden ranger archetypes, with the Warden bringing magic back into the class in a somewhat more simplified and evocative way.

You'll also find some rules for building urban rangers, including introducing firearms from my previous work on the Gunslinger.

CREATOR
I had a lot of fun working on this redesign. Rangers have always drawn my attention because of their wilderness skill, but I have never enjoyed messing with their spellcasting ability. I've always used alternative rules that replace their spells, or else I end up forgetting to even use them because in my head they don't blend elegantly into the execution at the table. I have poked my head in a lot of holes around the internet and seen a vast collection of ideas for "fixing" the Ranger after Wizards took a stab at it with their Unearthed Arcana article. My take on the Ranger puts a lot of what I like front and center in the class. I was inspired by the Hunter archetype and the 5e playtest versions of the Ranger before that, so making sure that you could make really specific narrative choices that were reinforced by mechanics that had a more open implementation was paramount in focusing my design. Hopefully the result is something that anyone can enjoy.

PURCHASER
The thrill behind this ranger, other than the stunning cover art, is the martial power infused with natural energy. The current class in players handbook, pulled back on the physicality and tried to add a spell component, however the balance could not be struck between combat and utility. With this ranger you start seeing how nature influenced his journey and fuels his martial skill set.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
