Swanmay Player Race (5e)

Suggested Price $0.50

The Swanmays are a secret order of female lycanthropes sworn to protect nature and to fight evil wherever it rears its ugly head. This PDF contains everything you need to play a Swanmay as a player race in the 5th edition of the Dungeons & Dragons. Not only are the Swanmay an interesting race with a rich lore behind them, they also fill a gap in the races of D&D 5ed by being a race that give a +2 to Wisdom.
Also contains a stat block for the Swan creature.

Choose to play a Swanmay if you want…

To have a strong connection to Nature and the Fae

To be a part of a secretive order

To protect nature and fight evil

To soar majestically through the air.

To be a member of a race that favours the Cleric, Druid or Ranger classes.

Recently revised and updated to include rules to play a swanmay as a lineage or a lycanthropic template.

Looking for more player options? Why not check out my Mongrelfolk or Saurial player races.

Reviews, Feedback and playtesting of the Swanmay would be greatly appreciated as It has only seen limited playtesting so far by me. Your name will be added to the playtesting credits if you submit your experiences with the race and your name to me.

I love Swanmay, I make it so my character does not have her cloak of changing until she is a higher level. She has to earn the right to transform for her patron. It's a good way to re-balance them for starters

OK. Now that I have dug a little deeper, I have a couple more comments. Please don't take it in any way other than constructive criticism, because I truly love that you have brought this piece of D&D lore to life in 5th Edition.

Now as far as racial balance as a starting race, Swanmays are a bit powerful. Though limited to a single shape, Swan Form is pretty powerful, as only an 8th level druid could do the same thing. Adding 3 spell-like abilities on top of that may be too much. I would recommend removing the Animal Messenger (doesn't quite 100% fit) and Speak With Plant (again doesn't quite 100% fit), and increase the Speak With Animals ability to at will without spell components (makes sense because she spends half her life as an animal).

Now as a template, you don't have to worry about things like racial balance, so that could be and advantage. Again, I would recommend writing Swanmay up as both a race and template option, and DM's can decide for themselves which is best...See more

Thank you for the criticism. Been hoping to get some good feedback so I welcome it. Ill think about changes to their natural spell-casting abilities. I got the idea for the Speak with Plants from the book of exalted deeds version of the Swanmay in 3.5, animal messenger was spun out of their ability to talk to beasts. I tried to use Aasimar and Tieflings as other races with natural spell-casting abilities as a benchmark to gauge their strength by, but as I've mentioned elsewhere I've only been able to play test this myself, and its easy to get blind without more perspectives and so there may definitely be room for improvement. The Swanmay race may have some extra power behind them, but most of their tricks are geared more towards out of combat situations and travel.

Adding an option of using them as a template is a great suggestion. Ill have to work on that, to be honest that thought just hadnt crossed my mind. Considering they are Lycanthropes of a kind this should definetly be an option.

I have loved everything about the concept of the Swanmay all the way back to 2nd Edition. I was personally bummed that only girls got to join when I was a player. But as a DM, I always wanted to find a way to introduce them into the party. I am besides myself in excitement that you made this! And that you made it well, with sharp and concise lore that blends in seamlessly to the 5th Edition ecosystem. I simply love it! I will go on more about that in my official review.

But I do have only one criticism. By the nature and lore of how a Swanmay is actually created, wouldn't it make a little more sense as a "template" (like Half-Dragon)? If you could find a way to make a template version of the race, in addition to keeping all the creative work of the actual race itself, I think you'll have something that every DM will want to use in their campaigns. What do you think?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
