Wayfarer [Class]

Want to create your own creature companion and travel the multiverse together?

A woman with dark hair walks silently along a winding path. She is accosted by bandits, but in an instant, a fiendish black hound with fire licking from its lips rushes to her side, with an unbridled fury far surpassing her attackers. The bandit leader shudders for a moment, and then turns to stab his ally. At this, the bandits flee, leaving the woman and her now-tranquil companion alone.

This all-new class has everything you need to create your own creature companion and fight alongside it in your next game! Your creature, called an amicus, is completely customizable, from its type (make it a beast, undead, construct, or more!) to its powers (give it the ability to spin webs, turn invisible, or grow to Gargantuan size!).

The wayfarer is a full spellcasting class who gains access to powerful magical abilities related to planar travel and traversal, who relies on their pet for combat. The sheer number of options available to this class allows you to take it in any direction you please. At the same time, this class seeks perfect balance with the base classes provided to players in the Player's Handbook, to ensure that this class can be dropped into any 5th edition game without issue.

I really hope you enjoy the class, and happy gaming!

Just got this and it looks like a lot of fun, but the spell list seems to be missing a lot of non-core stuff that would be fitting for the class. In paticular, Dream of the Blue Veil from Tasha's Cauldron seems like a no-brainer, so I am wondering if such spells where left out due to legality reasons, or simply because this was made before any of those splats where released and its just never been updated? Spells like, say, Create Bonfire where added in actual real books after the Elemental Evil Player's companion was mentioned, so the fact that and not the later books they where printed in makes me think its just a case of forgetting to update and not legal concerns, hence why I am making this post. If it is legal concerns, however, I totally get that, and as a result for those who want to know what non-core spells would be fitting to give the class I'll post a list of what I'd allow the class to access if I where DMing for somebody playing it below:

Conjure Fey should also be added in under 6th level for the spell list expansion. I did not have enough edit time to add it. If you don't feel the "conjure X" spells AND the summoning spells should be given to the class, than I think the Tasha's "Summon X" spells fit the class better due to having "build your own summon" mechanics akin to the Wayfarer's animicus but less extensive, unlike the "conjure X spells that conjure monsters straight from the MMs, and if you as a GM feel the same way, then feel free to remove the following spells from the expanded/non-core spell expansion I posted above:

Conjure Animals
Summon Lesser Demons (despite having "summon" and not "conjure" in the name it works more like a "conjure" spell than a Tasha's "build your own summon" spell)
Conjure Minor Elementals
Summon Greater Demon (see: Summon Lesser Demon's reasons to be removed)
Conjure Elemental
Conjure Woodland...See more

I really enjoy this approach to a Summoner style class that was prevalent in past editions, conjuring or manifesting some form of other entity to fight with you. However, I was surprised to see no Abberation option for the Amicus and the Plane Touched subclass. Oozes, Humanoids, and Dragons I get because the first one is partially covered by the Abyss, and you're the humanoid of the duo, and dRagons are attached to the Prime Material. But why was The Far Realm or Limbo not included as options?

Love the concept of this class! I do have a question though, in the Amicus Powers section, there is a ability called "Constrict", it says that when your amicus makes a successful natural attack against a creature, the target is grappled (escape DC equal to your amicus's save DC). I was wondering rather than using the amicus's save DC, can I use a contest of amicus's Strength (Athletics) check to the target's Strength (Athletics) or Dexterity (Acrobatics) check? Also the same thing about the ability, "Charge".

One question, if you add the Armor or Weapon bond to your amicus, and you equip it with a magical armor/weapon, would the amicus be able to atunne to it to use them at their full potential?

Just reached lvl 2, and im already having problems thinking how to distribute the stats on the Amicus haha

This is really a territory where you should consult with your DM. With the available stats, it's possible to give your amicus fairly high Intelligence so that they could understand attuned weaposn and such. Similar to the "Can my amicus learn a feat" sidebar, this should really be left to your DMs judgement. If there's tons of magical items available, it might make the wayfarer + amicus too overly powerful to be able to wield that many magical items at once. However, if there's an item that makes thematic sense for the story, I could definitely see the side that the amicus could attune to it themselves.

For the most part, however, I'd err on the side of caution and advise against allowing an amicus to attune to multiple magical items.

Thanks for checking it out, hope your game goes great!

One more question in that reguard if i may, Its something i've been thinking, since the damage of the amicus scales as a cantrip for the natural attacks, wouldnt equiping a sword in the "mid-late" game, just downgrade his dps, seeing as he doesnt have multiattack?

I ill try the Amicus for real this weekend ^^ im kinda hyped to roleplay with it too

Technically yes, but I did want to leave the option open for an amicus to wield a magical weapon if it worked for someone's campaign. In most situations it would be a downgrade, but you can never predict how a campaign will go, so I wanted to allow for the possibility.

Well, hey! I'm currently playing a game with the wayfarer here and i'm loving it. It's a unique flavor. I found it a little odd to be playing level one with this character, admittedly, since there wasn't really a source of damage or healing for me. But, with that said, once i got my amicus, it was jolly good fun.

I do have a question, though. For the Crushing Despair ability for shadowtouched, there doesn't seem to be a range on it. Is it safe to say that it's simply who you can see?

Without a listed range it's really meant to be left to your DMs judgment. Whatever your DM feels is appropriate based on the ability.

Hey there Alex, thanks for the effort you put into the class. I just started a new campaign and wanted to check this class out and ended up rolling one with a focus in the Abyssal Plane. Currently level 3.

I do have a couple questions though regarding the class. What is current intended role you have in mind for the Wayfarer? Currently at level three I don't feel like I am able to pull my weight at times in fights and I feel like I don't really have a role in my group. We currently are running a Cleric, Warlock, Rogue, Monk, and I.

I felt almost forced to dump higher stats into my Amicus's charisma if I want to have a relative decent chance to be successful using it's skills, which in turn causes me to then chose if I want it to have either a lower health pool for an extra modifier or so worth of hit chance and damage, or sacrifice that amount to give it a couple extra HP.

I did notice that the class does seem to be more support based, but when compared to some other classes...See more

Hi David, thanks for checking it out!

My feeling about the class is that it's definitely meant to be support-focused. You have cantrips which will deal more damage as you level, and a scant few damaging spells, but for the most part, your spells should be reserved for utility and support. The amicus itself can be built to be fairly powerful, so the power budget of the class itself can be unusual compared to others. Typically in a fight, I would expect that the amicus is sent into the fray, while you stay back and support when needed. Cleric and bard definitely have big damage spikes, while the amount of damage a wayfarer can put out is more spread out, aside from being able to banish creatures.

Also keep in mind that your amicus's attack scales like a cantrip as well, and a lot of the powers your amicus can learn require no kind of save and don't give any special abilities, but just passively add power. If you don't want to put your ASIs into your amicus's powers, you can keep those ASIs...See more

Thanks for the reply man! It is definitely an interesting and unique class that without a doubt piqued my interest and I will for sure be delving more into the class throughout my groups sessions and as our campaign progresses. I can't wait to get it into the medium to higher levels to really test it's abilities, if our group survives of course haha.

I'll try to keep it updated! Have a good one.

Of note too is that the pet can make two attacks with the same action. Granted, it has to have two targets bunched up in melee to do so, but that’s still two attacks that deal Cantrip level damage. While the pet’s damage isn’t great, with the right build that can be two grapples, at range, which potentially could be very powerful in terms of sheer crowd control.

To be honest, I've only played a little bit of Magic with my wife and brothers-in-law, but don't know anything about the lore or stories. This is all my own original work.

Another great class, Alex!

Just found a typo in the Amicus Form subsection. "The type of
creature **your amicus** depends on what plane's energy flows
through you (see Plane-touched, below)."

Epic class! I'll be leaving a review when I get the chance to play it!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
