Play D&D as a cat! Why not?! This document contains all the relevant backstory and traits for the grimalkin, as well as three six racial feats and some cute kitty drawings.

Grimalkins borrow much of their nature from domesticated cats, and so they don’t seek each other out the way most races do. There’s very little grimalkin culture to speak of, lacking even a common language. With their telepathic abilities, there’s really no need.

A grimalkin is very open to companionship, however, when the opportunity presents itself. Once one has bonded with another creature, it's loyal to the end. A grimalkin will defend its chosen companion to the death if needed, even when it could easily escape and save its own skin. Any group of people is lucky to have a grimalkin among them. Their malleable personalities make them very pleasant and agreeable.

  • 6/3/18: Better formatting and a new feat!
  • 4/16/18: Wrote a new addendum section with two more feats and thoughtful notes on how well this race meshes with various classes and subclasses.

I have a question regarding the weak spot part of the Kilkenny Cat feat. I might be missing something, but I'm not sure whether you intended the checking for a weak spot to be an action, a bonus action or a free action as part of an attack.

Interesting race that I'm already thinking of some character designs for but I was curious about something: what creature type would you consider this race? As a obvious logical thing most races are humanoid but the Grimalkin PDF meanwhile has bits and pieces here and there that weave a story that Grimalkin aren't just mere awakened cats but instead something Fey or magical in nature but at the same time the have the body and limits of the Beast type.

Honestly the main reason I'm asking is because spells and magical items and whatnot sometimes only affect certain creature types. Figured you would maybe have an answer for that? Once again really like the race and the extra content added in like the feats and the pages about class match ups with the race.

Love this race. I am just trying to think how to turn in into a proper furious fighter. Perhaps use Monk class and then just justify it within RP?

Maybe one comment - compared to all other races, isnt +1 dex a bit sub-par? Not sure whether for such heavy DEX based character +2 would not be better.

My main reasoning for giving them a lower stat buff is that they already have such a powerful perk with their ability to use Wild Shape, and I didn't want them to be OP. If you decide to play one, you could talk your DM into letting you have the extra point.

Just testing it right now and the extra agility point is probably unnecessary. So far my experience is only at lvl 1 with Igola Monk, and so far the Cat is the biggest killer of the group. That 1 dice increased hand damage + decent dex bonus does a lot. The Blue cat might be even stronger in a long run due to the 1AC bonus.

The inability to manipulate with tools is actually not that inhibiting in a larger group, where someone can do the tool stuff instead.

I am curious about the Feral Grapple from lvl 4. Our GM had already expressed some concerns about this being somewhat overpowered, but I really love the idea. See how it plays when I can get it and combine with the Ninga monk.

Thanks for the feedback! I've heard some concerns about the Kilkenny Cat feat, which I think is what you're referring to, and I'll be looking over it again soon-ish to see if it should be nerfed or just tweaked. At the very least, my wording is sloppy, so it should be rewritten for clarity. Please let me know how things progress!

I have not had chance to test it yet, but my thoughts on this:
1. (sorry) a bit too "chained" wording. First you can find a weak spot, then you can dash, then you grapple... need to read it several times to get all the combat succession. Perhaps skip the first two points (detect weak spot and Ferral grapple after dashing) to make it clearer?

2. The "two attacks for an attack turn with maximum damage" might be a bit OP or rather weak, depending on the class:

I would say its a bit OP for a combat-oriented spellcasters (you get + dmg, but more importantly 2 attacks per turn, which those guys never get. For Warlock cat oh yes please).

For combat characters except monk, it is probably +- balanced for lower levels, but will be underpowered for higher tears. The 'maximum damage' translates as '+1.5 to DMG roll' in average for 1d4 attach, which is ok. At higher tiers, some of the fighters get 3-4 attacks per turn while this one forces just two, so it becomes...See more

Well, now that you mention it, yeah! I went out of my way to make them viable as spellcasters, but they're pretty badly hobbled when it comes to strength-based fighting. Handheld weapons and shields are out, obviously, and they have no range without magic because they can't shoot arrows or throw anything. You can substitute XXX & Scratch for finesse weapons like daggers for two-weapon fighting, at least. There are some styles and subclasses that are just completely incompatible, though. I can't figure out a legit way to let a cat swing a warhammer around.

I think you could play any class with a grimalkin as long as you're creative and have a DM who's willing to work with you. Be wary of which options to avoid and play on the race's strengths. Aside from being powerful druids, they're well-suited for rogues, monks, rangers, and any sort of pure spellcasting class. And the classes they're not as suited for could still be very fun to play! These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
