Magic Items for Monks and More

This document contains a collection of 14 magic items. The majority of the items are thematically related to the monk class. These items were lightly play-tested in the 5th edition of Dungeons & Dragons.

I appreciate any feedback you provide.

If you decide this is worth your money, I greatly appreciate your generosity. Your patronage gives validity to a dream I once thought was futile.

Changes as of 08/09/2020

Minor editing pass and changes to document security settings to allow copying of the text and graphics.

Changes as of 1/23/2020

Implementation of certain layout techniques that improves the readability of the document while maintaining the visual aesthetic.

Changes as of 10/30/17:
General improvements to grammar, layout.

Updates to the following items:

  • Amulet of Adroitness: an overall improvement to the wording/syntax of the item. A reduction from a 7 day window to a 3 day window.
  • Club of Dancing Sparks: Now a "the first time you hit a creature each turn" mechanic, allowing it to trigger on opportunity attacks if the player missed their attacks on their turn, but the overall function remains the same. Changed the wording to ensure there isn't confusion regarding whether or not a creature can be affected by the club multiple times (it can, but being affected has no impact on the intensity of the light or the additional damage).
  • Dagger of the Black Disc: Improved the syntax of the mechanic, corrected the portion of the item regarding the dagger ignoring cover (an attack is impacted by cover, not the weapon used to make the attack), and implemented the finished play testing wording (no one was confused by this version).
  • Gloves of Booming Blows: Improved the syntax and organization of the charge mechanic to improve understanding of the item.
  • Hornet's Sting: Changed the 'once each round' limitation to 'Once on each of your turns'. Conceptually, this means the item is slightly weaker since it can't trigger on attacks of opportunity, but I found the 'each round' wording created a bit of confusion with some of my players. If you are more partial to the per round mechanic, feel free to ignore this change.
  • Staff of Gentle Breezes: Improved the strength of the primary property and windbreak property, increasing the length of the lines from 15 to 30 feet. Also made it trigger when the wielder attacks (instead of on a bonus action). After quite a bit of play testing, the general consensus was that it was neat as a dungeon 'gimmick' but not worth having all the time. As an uncommon item, this seems appropriate, but I dislike the idea of an item being undesirable outside of a 'gimmick' situation. The goal is for a monk (or other martial class) to see this as a trusty primary weapon at low levels that also does cool/funny stuff, and then keep it as a utility item at mid levels.
  • Spear of the Rivulet: A general improvement to the wording and syntax of the item's mechanic.

Changes as of 7/27/16

Changed some layout things that will likely go unnoticed.

Updates to the following items

  • Staff of Gentle Breezes: reworked the "on attack mechanic." Now when you flourish the staff (as a bonus action) you can hedge out a line (which can be bent and curved as desired for every 5-foot segment) of gas up to 15 feet long and 5 feet wide. Removed the ability for spell casters to ignore the effect of the staff, which essentially made this property fairly weak in addition to extremely situational. The staff now requires attunement.
  • Uwagi of Turquoise Clouds: changed some of the wording to lend more flavor to the item and make it sound less like the uwagi "pukes a bunch of gas," as one of my players put it. The function remains unchanged.
  • Spear of the Rivulet: added a visual description of the spear's effect to help facilitate the understanding of its function (a problem that came up after introducing it). Cleaned up the syntax of the item's rules.
  • Incense of Insight: replaced the "channel ki" descriptor with "use ki".

Changes as of 7/12/16

  • More revisions to grammar, spelling, syntax.
  • A few changes to the layout that may or may not be noticeable.
  • Crystalline Geode now regains all of its charges daily at dawn.
  • Dagger of the black disc has had a "black haze" descriptor text added to it; the function of the weapon remains unchanged.
  • Revisions to gloves of booming blows description and rules text; the function of the gloves remains unchanged.
  • Revisions to the description and rules text for Amulet of Adroitness; the function of the amulet remains unchanged. Specifically, I attempted to clarify that you can only choose a skill proficiency without meditating the first time you attune to the amulet. Breaking your attunement to the amulet and to reattuning to it later means you must also spend time meditating with the amulet to gain any benefits after the attunement process.

Changes as of 6/17/16 and before:

  • Constant improvements to grammar and spelling as well as syntax when play with the items occurs.
  • Improvements to the paragraph layout of items to facilitate quickly finding specific pieces of information. For example, the charge information for the Crystalline Geode is now at the bottom, instead of in the middle of the item's description.
  • Simplified the Crystalline Geode's charge mechanic, reduced the frequency of use. It now has 4 charges and regains 1 charge every 6 hours it remains closed.
  • Added specificity to the Gloves of Booming Blows' charge mechanic and clarified the text to reflect the RAW of the Player's Handbook; unarmed strikes are not weapons, thus can't become magic weapons.
  • Improved the wording of Club of Dancing Sparks to reflect that it illuminates the affected creature, not a radius around it.
  • Several revisions to the Dagger of the Black Disc; I can finally read it and not think "well, that could be worded a lot better."
  • Removed the mechanic from Belt of Handy Hooks' that guaranteed advantage/disadvantage to notice the hooks opening or closing. This is now the purview of the DM keeping in mind the item's description.
  • Improvements to the Amulet of Reincarnation and a reduction in the time to be reincarnated; down to 3 days from 7.
  • Improved the wording of Incense of Insight to provide a guideline about the information acquired.
  • Increased the range of Spear of the Rivulet from 120 feet to 300 and improved the item's description.
  • Improved the Uwagi of Turquoise Clouds to reflect its use as a way to protect allies when surprised. The area of its effect was increased to a 15-foot diameter.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
