The cypher is not intended to work - but feel free to tweak it to make it work!

Like our popular Abbot's Journal, this excellent PDF will enhance your Curse of Strahd campaign with gorgeous visuals to explain and reinforce the storyline and imaginations of your players.

The text here is picked up and adapted from the campaign book. A few things are explained a little differently but it's largely the same story exposition. I just felt a few lines needed a light tweak, just to make it unique and a little more powerful.

There is a PRINTABLE Double-Sided version that fits on TWO sheets of paper. Print front to back.

There's little that I can say that looking at the preview wouldn't accomplish better, so, please PAY WHAT YOU THINK THIS IS WORTH and have a great time sharing it with your players! And remember, check out my other numerous Curse of Strahd materials!

BONUS!! I've cleaned up the art but added a CYPER PUZZLE!! Okay it's a very simple one. The numbers underneath the first "journal" page correspond to the Cypher Wheel on the last page. The PCs should start at the Ψ and write the numbers in clockwise (why clockwise? because that's the way they're written on the first page, left to right of the symbol).

You can use this cyper, with a Jester in it, for a message from Pidlwick, or possibly even Blinsky!

AS ALWAYS, WE INCLUDE A LOW-INK B&W VERSION for your convenience.

My group has been busy with this cypher, which looks awesome. But it just won't solve. Even with hints provided in other comments. What is the supposed solution meant to be?

I think there is a mistake in the cipher, ok with the clockwise, one of the 18 should be a 17, right? and ! . symbols not match with any number, also after Ψ, there is an X that maybe is a mistake too?
Overall nice one.

Could you explain if I'm correct or how really works the cipher?
Thanks

The cipher is unsolvable unless you are supposed to end up with a jumbled string of letters. If you plug in the numbers as presented in the pdf you get "EJXFTDMYBSHPUNKV (“X” and “R” are both are listed in the cipher as being 18 and there is no 17) WGLIOAQC", and there are no numbers to correlate to "Z", the period, and the exclamation mark. If you assume that the "X" directly after PSI is a mistake you get "FKYGUENZCTIQVOLW (“A” and “S” are now both listed as being 18 with no 17) XHMJPBRD". And there is still no number to correlate to either the period or the exclamation mark. It was a neat idea, but I personally think this would just frustrate most groups.

Should have read more closely and realized this edits the language in the original tome of strahd. Not really a fan of the "Author's tone" as I feel Strahd would be more... eloquent than this (as he is in the book's version). The cipher is neat and the printout worked flawlessly, albeit this would benefit from some instructions for the double-sided printing process. Go for it if you're not bothered by unnecessary editing. Happy to give a creator some money, but ultimately won't be using this for my campaign.

Love this but I do have one question. There are two 18 in the cipher, an no 17. I assume two letters can not both be 18 and since you have started A=18, I assume the second should be a 17 then. Otherwise two different letters equal 18. So my question is am a not understanding and doing the cipher correctly or is it an error/typo?

Anyone have a creative use for the cipher? Also, was anyone able to reconcile the three extra spaces on the wheel? We are given 26 numbers (corresponding the alphabet, obviously), but the cipher has 29 spaces... Unless I'm missing something, this seems to be an incomplete cipher. I'm considering photoshopping the image for my own use prior to handing out to the players, but I'd like to know if I'm missing something before I do that.

Any chance this can get an update and maybe some more depth or puzzles // pictures in it? Single sided print is horrible due to all the blank pages in the tome after printing.

This great, I wanted to add something to the Tome to create a portal to face Vampyr eventually. This is perfect.

For those having cypher issues

"The PCs should start at the Ψ and write the numbers in clockwise..."

A = 18, B = 24, C = 9 etc.

Correct me if I’m wrong Carl, but for everyone having trouble with the cipher, I believe he has provided the solution to a puzzle, not the actual puzzle itself. So if you wanted to create a hidden message from an NPC you can use the tome as a way to get the solution to the PCs.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
