Now updated to reflect the new character options in Fizban's Treasury of Dragons!

The Draconomicon introduces new dragon species that were available throughout D&D's history.  This document contains 10 new dragon species for use in your 5e games.  Three chromatic dragons (the brown dragon, gray dragon, and purple dragon) and seven metallic dragons (the adamantine dragon, cobalt dragon, iron dragon, mercury dragon, mithril dragon, orium dragon, and steel dragon).  Inside you can find stat blocks for each dragon, of all four life stages depicted in 5e's Monster Manual; wyrmling, young, adult, and ancient.  Each set of dragons comes with appropriate lore pertaining to their lifestyles and habits, as well as their lairs and additional combat options such as lair actions.  Additional Player Options are also provided at the end of the document, allowing dragonborn, draconic sorcerers, and my own dragon shaman class to choose new traits based on one of these new dragon types.

If you enjoy this PDF, please consider supporting Wizards of the Coast directly by purchasing the original Draconomicons.

Change Log:

Version 4.0 26Oct2021

  • Formatting is slightly different due to using Homebrewery's updated V3 tools.
  • Minor language changes throughout the document.
  • Added fire resistence to the brown dragons, and a line in the Sand Walk trait that establishes they are adapted to hot climates.  While historically brown dragons do not have any particular resistence to fire, after a lot of deliberation I decided it was a fair addition to the 5e version of the species and actually very flavorful, as I would expect a species designed exclusively for living in the desert to be naturally resistent to heat in some capacity.  Also, players who choose some kind of ancestry or class based on the brown dragon had to jump through additional hoops with unique features to compensate for this lack of any kind of damage immunity/resistence. Adding fire resistence to the brown dragon provides a natural damage type for these player characters.
  • Cobalt dragons were given intimidation proficiency, which I think they always should have had due to their natural habit of intimidating individuals that enter their territory.
  • The dragonborn player options were re-written slightly to work with the new variants presented in Fizban's Treasury of Dragons.

Version 3.1 02Aug2021
  • Added the change shape feature to the Adult Adamantine Dragon, which was missing it.
  • Fixed some mathematical mistakes for the Cobalt Dragons and Steel Dragons.
  • Following WotC's recent examples, added the proficiency bonus for each stat block in the stat block itself, next to the CR for the creature.
  • Fixed some general formatting

Version 3.0 18Mar2021

  • Updated with 7 new metallic dragon species; adamantine, cobalt, iron, mercury, mithril, orium, and steel.
  • A few of the existing dragons have had their stats slightly tweaked.
  • The Character Options at the end of the document have been updated to include the new dragons as further potential choices.

Super disappointed in this. Was hoping for accurate Purple Dragons with their Plasma Breath and Plasma Lance abilities, but got this weird generic "Psychotropic" necrotic damage breath instead. Purple Dragons are supposed to be combinations of Red and Blue dragons, and the blending of fire and lightning made for a unique, terrifying Plasma Breath and Plasma Lance that would punch through cover and ignore fire resistance. Also, no Orange Dragons with their sodium breath, no named legendary dragons (Iymrith, Daurgothoth, Klauth, Imvaernarhro, etc), which is what I was mainly hoping for, at their proper 30-50 CR ratings. I was hoping that something entitled "The Draconomicon" was going to deliver on that, as previous Draconomicon titles are where these dragons originally came from, but at this point it just seems like Fizban's Lite. Appreciate all the work and art that went into this, because obviously the effort was tremendous, but not what I was looking for.

When do you think that the next update will be ready? I would be willing to put down a couple bucks for obsidian dragons.

I'm going to get the obsidian dragons out this weekend, but it will remain free; there's certain aspects of this document that I can't/don't want to have people pay for.

Yes, actually! The next update will introduce the obsidian gem dragon, and there will be a new section that introduces four unique great wyrms, each with a name and history, that you can fit into your games (and of course modify as you please).

Got this to have a look at and like what I am seeing so far.

But you got me at the opening line "***The original*** Draconomicons were supplements for the ***4th edition*** of Dungeons and Dragons."

D'oh, you caught me! My first edition of D&D was 3.5 in high school, but I only played it bit. I didn't take a deeper dive into the hobby until college, at which time 4e was the edition my friends and I played, so I was only ever familiar with that edition.

I will make some changes accordingly!

Hello, @The Arcane Athenaeum!
My name is Francisco Ferreira, I'm a freelance translator from Brazil.
I'm working on portuguese versions of "FREE" and "PAY WHAT YOU WANT" material from DMs Guild, and I really appreciate your content.
I would like to make your content available in portuguese, and I want to know if you are in agreement with that.
DMs Guild do allow translations from contents of their publishings, but I think is important to ask for the author's permission.
Thanks in advance!

After testing the new metallic update with my players and DM friends, as well as their applications to the Dragon Shaman, I have to say I am not disappointed in the slightest. Excellent work on these additions. As a huge fanatic of anything Draconic, this and the Dragon Shaman class have been some of my favourite pieces of content.

technically, the brown has piercing damage, so could potentially do something with instead of saying they don't have a damage type which technically is not true, elemental damage type would be more accurate since the other dragons use the elemental damages of spells that can have a sort of energy based form in dnd, also, your custom class is missing some significant info, i'd recommend restructuring it as a druid subclass, as in 5e such roles fall under that class typically for mechanics

I assume you're talking about the dragon shaman when you say custom class; that is a separate document you can also get on DMsGuild; the features listed in this document are just for the new dragons species. You'll need the other document to play one.

With the brown dragon, I just want to avoid providing damage resistance or extra damage (in the case of the draconic sorcerer) for piercing damage, which I don't think is appropriate for the situation. I believe new in v3.0 is a new draconic sorcerer feature for brown dragon sorcerers that lets you get extra damage on any earth-based spells. It lists a few examples and notes that the DM ultimately decides what qualifies for that bonus and what doesn't. Just to be thematically appropriate; I'd imagine a brown dragon sorcerer would want to focus on more earth/rock/sand based spells anyway, so it becomes a simple matter of the DM and player just agreeing on what qualifies.

The short version is life hit me with a lot of things at once, but it's done. 10 dragons; 3 chromatics, 7 metallics, and character options for all of them.

Gem dragons would be the only other "group" left to create, but I actually rather like Matt Colville's versions of them so I don't think I'll be taking the same crack at them right now. Other special dragons like volcanic dragons or astral dragons can be found in other supplements, like the Tome of Beasts, so I'm not sure I'll be hitting those either.

Very sorry for how unacceptably long this took.

Yes, actually!

2020 has been.... difficult. Some personal stuff went down, and I'm not talking about the pandemic. But I'm finally coming back to working on things.

I have only one more metallic dragon left to finish the mechanics on. Then it's just writing the lore for the new species, and then this'll be updated. I'm hoping to have it done within the first week of September and trying to give myself that hard deadline.

I haven't yet decided that. I tend not to design stuff if someone else has already made a version of it that I like a lot, the Matt Colville's gem dragons are pretty fantastic in my opinion. At this time I have no plans to do so.

Matt Colville runs MCDM Productions; he has a YouTube channel and made a Kickstarter for a book called "Strongholds and Followers". I believe you can order the book still on his website. He has gem dragons in that book with cool psionic abilities.

*releases long breath*

It's out.

I'm sure no one cares and I'm not going to be dropping all the details of my personal life on the Internet; long and honest answer is that I work in the medical industry, so we ended up being extremely busy during the pandemic, my partner left me in a very traumatic and economically damaging way, and I've been struggling every since.

But it's out, all 7 new metallic dragons accounted for. Including the 3 chromatic dragons, that's 10 dragons total. And player character options for all of them.

I do apologize profusely for the extremely long amount of time that it took to get it out; every time I thought I'd be able to get down to finishing it I'd have something new crop up that took all my attention and mental health to deal with.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
