A strangely delivered advertisement has led you to a sage named Demetrios. He needs a rare component to complete a desperately needed potion. The journey to retrieve it will take you through a large, unexplored swamp to a ruined keep, the former headquarters of a vile cult that once claimed the lives of many innocent youths.

To solve the mysteries of "Baltron's Beacon," the characters must excel in handling wilderness, building ruins, traps, puzzles, and new monsters. This adventure, originally designed for tournament use, is now available for your own campaign.

An adventure for 5-10 characters of levels 4th-8th.

Product History

I7: "Baltron's Beacon" is the seventh module in the Intermediate series of adventures. It was released in November 1985.

Cover. You could swear that is Tika Waylan on the cover, with the curly red hair and the warrior's outfit. Cover artist Larry Elmore did also draw many iconic pictures of the Dragonlance characters - including Tika - so who (besides he) is to say?

A Classic Dungeon Crawl. Though published in the mid-80s, "Baltron's Beacon" offers up a fairly standard dungeon crawl of the sort that could have been published almost a decade earlier. There's a limited backstory for how some of the inhabitants came to reside in the Beacon, but there's not much attempt beyond that to create an ecology for the dungeon.

Though the Beacon is set in a swampland, that wilderness is detailed with less than a page of random encounters. Instead, the adventure consists almost entirely of dungeon-crawling, including adventures through a gatehouse, a keep, and a couple of levels of actual dungeon. Traps and monsters abound, as you'd expect in a classic dungeon adventure!

Unusual Accessories. "Baltron's Beacon" includes a few player accessories that were more common in the C-series ("Competition") and S-series ("Special") adventures than in standard TSR releases, including pregenerated characters; a player map; and a few pictures meant to be shown to players.

Expanding Greyhawk. When originally published, "Baltron's Beacon" was meant to be used "in any campaign or world setting." However, in the early 2000s, Gary Holian absorbed a couple of these "orphaned" TSR adventures into the Living Greyhawk campaign. Thus, both I2: "Tomb of the Lizard King" (1982) and I7: "Baltron's Beacon" are now a canonical part of Greyhawk's Keoland, as verified by references in "The Kingdom of Keoland" from Living Greyhawk Journal #1 (2000).

"Places of Mystery: Gateways to Adventure," published in Dragon #304 (February 2002), also by Gary Holian, verifies the placement of "The Hool Beacon" in Greyhawk and provides more background, much of it drawn from "Baltron's Beacon."

About the Creators. Philip Meyers was the original author of I4: "Oasis of the White Palm" (1983), which Tracy Hickman revised to be part of the Desert of Desolation trilogy. This was his one other major TSR publication.

About the Product Historian

The history of this product was researched and written by Shannon Appelcline, the editor-in-chief of RPGnet and the author of Designers & Dragons - a history of the roleplaying industry told one company at a time. We (Wizards) recognize that some of the legacy content available on this website does not reflect the values of the Dungeons & Dragons franchise today. Some older content may reflect ethnic, racial, and gender prejudice that were commonplace in American society at that time. These depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. This content is presented as it was originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed. Dungeons & Dragons teaches that diversity is a strength, and we strive to make our D&D products as welcoming and inclusive as possible. This part of our work will never end.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
